Zabel: $1.5 million grant to assist Upper Darby shopping center
State Rep. Mike Zabel, D-Delaware, announced Friday a $1.5 million Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program grant to assist in the construction of a revitalized shopping center in Upper Darby Township.
State Road Foods LLC will demolish the existing and aged Drexeline Shopping Center and replace it with a 75,000-squarefoot grocery store to serve as the anchor of the new shopping center.
The total cost of the project is estimated at $17.4 million. The new grocery outlet is expected to give Upper Darby residents better access to healthy foods, while the facility would also host a new pharmacy. In addition to helping fund construction, the grant money will support purchase and installation of fixed HVAC and refrigeration equipment.
“This is great news for the Drexel Hill community, not only because it will ultimately give us access to fresh and healthy foods, but because it injects new life into an outdated shopping center, creates jobs and keeps money flowing into our neighborhoods,” Zabel said. “It’s also important to thank state Senator Tim Kearney for his efforts in helping secure the funding for this project.”
The state funds are administered by the Office of the Budget to assist in construction of regional, economic, cultural, civic, recreational and historical improvement projects.
