100 Years Ago – 1919: What is “McClurism” in politics, asks the hosts of strangers that have located in Delaware County in recent years, and what have been the methods of this political dynasty that for decades has dominated elections and controlled public officials, so as, for self-profit, In explanatio­n, looking to official betterment, and in hope of restoring the local body politics to healthier conditions, it is timely to advise the electorate.

75 Years Ago – 1944: The anti-pollution drive to prevent dumping of refuse in the Delaware River and to rid it of its noxious odors moved a tiny step forward on Monday. The river, fanned by a stiff and cool breeze, put on its best “olfactory” dress when some

35 federal, state and city officials representi­ng three of the four states border on the river toured to study the problem.

50 Years Ago – 1969:

A proposed highway plan that would turn western Delaware County into “the eventual industrial center of the entire county” was unveiled Thursday by the Delaware County Planning Commission. The proposal calls for extending the Media Bypass from Middletown to the Ward area in Concord where it would intersect with a relocated U.S. Route 202 and a widened state Route 322. The major interchang­e would be about 1 mile southeast of the proposed county airport-industrial park near Painter’s Crossroads. The highway network would provide four-lane access roads to New Jersey, via the proposed ChesterBri­dgeport Bridge, Delaware and the West Chester Bypass.

25 Years Ago – 1994:

Twenty-three young men and women who participat­ed in the Chester Summer Youth Program bid farewell to their summer employers and thanked the program’s sponsors during closing ceremonies at city hall on Friday. State Treasurer Catherine Baker Knoll joined Chester Mayor Barbara Bohannan-Sheppard, city officials, and local business leaders in praising the young peoples’ efforts, dedication and hard work.

10 Years Ago – 2009:

A Darby Township man was arrested on charges of stealing $335 worth of items from a truck Wednesday in the 200 block of Park Drive. The truck was parked at the rear of the owner’s home. Taken were a wallet containing credit cards and

$35 in cash and an iPod. The owner gave police a copy of a videotape with the actual theft being committed.
