Singles play leads Cardinal O’Hara to victory

Samma Zahran, Caroline Lynch and Clare Hayden set the tone as the Cardinal O’Hara girls tennis team opened the season on a winning note Wednesday.

The trio swept singles in straight sets in a 4-0 nonleague victory over Upper Darby that was shortened by rain.

Zahran was a 6-2, 6-0 winner at first singles. Lynch won 6-1, 6-1 at second singles. Hayden took a 6-3, 6-2 triumph at third singles. Stephanie Huseby and Elena Coffey needed three sets to win at first doubles. The second doubles match was halted by rain.

KENNETT 4, GARNET VALLEY 3 >> Olivia Beldyk and Tomi Abetayo pulled out a 3-6, 6-3, 12-10 victory at third singles to lift the Blue Demons over the Jaguars in a backand-forth battle.

Kennett swept singles, but Garnet Valley took three of the four doubles matches. Katherine Li and Afrah Riaz won 7-6, 6-2 at first doubles. Shay Ubhayaratn­e and Cady Su scored a 7-5, 7-5 victory at second doubles, and Grace Kieffer and Soumya Vadlamudi turned in a 6-1, 6-4 triumph at third doubles for the Jags.

Golf

Cardinal O’Hara’s Joseph Taggart and Thomas Larkin had a good idea early on that they were in for a good day Wednesday.

Both birdied the par-4 first hole at Paxon Hollow Golf Club to lead O’Hara to a 193219 nonleague victory over Penncrest. Taggart went on to card an even-par

35, while Larkin finished with a 1-over 36. Ryan Garvey (38) also broke 40 for O’Hara.

Eli Shan fired a 38 to lead Penncrest.
