100Years Ago – 1919: Quite a number of Chester Shriners braved the rain and paraded with their fellow Nobles of LuLu Temple in the great Peace Jubilee pageant in Philadelph­ia Saturday afternoon. Chester had a very representa­tive number in the line and formed a special section in the LuLu lineup; The Supreme Court today advanced for argument on December a case under which is expected the court will define what amount of alcohol makes a beverage intoxicati­ng. The final decision will determine the fate of 2.75beer which the lower court held was not intoxicati­ng in this case.

75Years Ago – 1944: Apparently defying the old belief that crime and delinquenc­y increase with long wars, Chester’s 1944 total of police cases to date today showed a one-third drop under the same period last year. A few categories showed an increase in offense. These were rape, robbery, burglary, petty larceny and gambling. On the other hand, there hasn’t been a single murder or manslaught­er case yet this year. Twenty additional classifica­tions also showed a drop. Sharpest drops were shown in those cases that usually plague the city police court – disorderly conduct and drunkennes­s.

50Years Ago – 1969: Debates, house-to-house canvasses, peace vigils and prayer meetings will mark Delaware County’s participat­ion in Wednesday’s student moratorium seeking an end of the Vietnam War. An

R-7of Springfiel­d, speaking in favor of present U.S. foreign policy, and Haverford College Professor William Davidon, long an outspoken critic of the war and the nation’s foreign policy.

All numbers unofficial until validated. that police have begun day and night foot patrols in the borough’s business district. “”I see the foot patrols as a return to some of the basic values of our borough and an opportunit­y for the police not just to react to problems after they happen, but to intervene and prevent those problems ... while, at the same time, we get to know more about the people who live, work and shop in our town,’’ he said.

10Years Ago – 2009: Students at Chester High School may soon be able to try their hand at baking cakes or filling cavities. The district empowermen­t board will vote Thursday on whether to approve two new career and technical education programs: Baking and dental hygiene. The board will vote on whether to approve spending $64,000 for a state-of-the-art dental hygienist program and

$53,511 for baking equipment. If approved, both programs would get under way in January.
