Vaughan helps Sun Valley cling to one-goal win

Brendan Purfield’s firsthalf goal held up Saturday, thanks to great work in goal by Ryan Vaughan, as Sun Valley held off Springfiel­d for a 1-0 nonleague boys soccer win.

It was Vaughan’s fourth shutout of the season as the Vanguards improved to 6-82. Vaughan had five saves, with defensive help from Alex Benz, Joey Shapiro, Nate McGinnis, Logan Roland and John Nolek.

R.J. McGeary assisted on Purfield’s goal.

In other nonleague

STRATH HAVEN 2, AVON GROVE 0 >> Kind of a double-team, team effort for the Panthers, as Emmett Young and Sal Kaufman scored goals, Simon Bollinger and Ethan Birch had assists and Charlie Shankweile­r and Rob Guilday had two saves each in net. RADNOR 2, PENN WOOD 0 >> Ben Engstrom and Bobby Hydrisko scored secondhalf goals to boost the Raiders to victory. Joquain Cohen action: had five saves and Peter Vitale an assist.

In the Bicentenni­al League:

DELCO CHRISTIAN 3, NEW HOPE-SOLEBURY 1 >> Goalscorer­s for the Knights were Jason Woo (unassisted), Micah Metricarti and Jack Dill. Cole Levis had a pair of assists.

New Hope’s Ben Koeppen scored a goal, but Josiah Bronkema had four saves for the Knights. Kyle Campbell saved three for New Hope.

Field Hockey

Maggie Kondrath scored three goals to lead Agnes Irwin to a 7-2 victory over Our Lady of Good Counsel of Maryland Saturday.

Christina Lowther, Marissa White, Hadley Evans and Cheney Williams also scored for AIS, while Jordan Healy posted two saves. Agnes Irwin is 3-7-2.

Also in noneleague field hockey:

WEST CHESTER RUSTIN 3, RIDLEY 2 >> Ashley Venit and Grace Lord scored for the Green Raiders, with Kylie McNicholas contributi­ng an assist. Jordan Poillio had 10 saves for Ridley.

Girls Tennis

Kanon Ciarrocchi and Lucy Hederick didn’t have the easiest path to a Central League doubles title Saturday, but they got the job done anyway.

The Radnor duo dropped the first set to Conestoga’s Leena Kwak and Olivia Dodge Saturday, but rallied to claim the

6-4, 7-5. Ciarrocchi and Hederick had advanced from an allRadnor semifinal, topping teammates Annie Burton and Bridget Dougherty, 6-2,

6-4. That duo fell to Harriton’s Shaina Ginsberg and Allison Lao in the thirdplace match, 6-3, 6-4.

Fifth place went to Conestoga’s Coco Kambayashi and Belle Chen, topping Harriton’s Josephine Kwok and Kelly Tong, 6-2,

4-6, 6-3.
