Given a chance, Garrett shines at Central League Championsh­ips

Sean Garrett didn’t get a chance to test himself against Delaware County’s best last week, with Garnet Valley not participat­ing in the Delco Cross Country championsh­ips.

Saturday at the Central League meet, Garrett showed what he can do.

The Garnet Valley senior won the boys race in 16 minutes, 5.70 seconds, besting the field at Rose Tree Park by seven seconds and adding a wrinkle to the postseason pecking order.

16:12. Penncrest’s Jalen Chin took third in

16:25, the same time as Joey Litvin of Lower Merion. Patrick Theveny, the Penncrest senior who was the runner-up at Delcos, finished fifth, a spot ahead of Delcos champ Mike Donnelly in third in 16:33. With Haverford teammate Josh Fingerhut in seventh, seniors swept the top seven spots.

Penncrest came out on top in the team race with 49 points, comfortabl­y ahead of Haverford (60) and Lower Merion (75). Ben Klinger scored big points in ninth for Penncrest, a spot ahead of Haverford’s Ethan Fingerhut. Radnor’s Frank Brown and Owen Leonard were 11th and 12th, respective­ly.

Sarah Hurst of Lower Merion took the girls race in 19:18.50, seven ticks quicker than Strath Haven’s Rowe Crawford. Those two were the only ones to break 20 minutes, with Ava Crawford third and Haverford’s Maura Timoney fourth. Olivia Descovich of Garnet Valley rounded out the top five.

Strath Haven won the team title with 51 points, edging Haverford (62). Gwyneth Stach was 13th for the Panthers, and Stephanie Watson and Anya Hooper rounded out the scorers in 16th and 17th, respective­ly.

Haverford’s Katrina Miciek (sixth) and McKenna Looney (eighth) added top 10s for the Fords. Maddie Anderson of Penncrest was ninth, and Marple Newtown (11th-place Meredith Schrock), Upper Darby (Gabriella Frain in 12th) and Ridley (19th-place Kristina Tapia) were also represente­d in the top

20.

At the Neshaminy Open:

Jillian Barrett of Interboro finished 17th in the girls race, the best finish of the Delco participan­ts. She covered the course in 22 minutes, 11 seconds.

Agnes Irwin’s Caroline Shannon finished

19th, and Haley Ward of Interboro was 25th. On the boys side, Daniel Shanahan led Interboro across the line in 22nd place with a time of 19:07.
