100 Years Ago – 1919: Francis X. Guilday, the youngest son of Peter W. and Ellen T. Guilday, of 1201 Highland Ave., Chester, died yesterday at Misercordi­a Hospital, Philadelph­ia, after an illness of three weeks from typhoid fever. The young aspirant for the priesthood was in his 23rd year and gave great promise of a bright future. He was attended St. Michael’s Parochial School, then entered St. Joseph’s College, Philadelph­ia. In 1915 he entered St. Charles Borromeo Seminary at Overbrook and would have been ordained as a priest next May. His brother, the Rev. Dr. Peter Gulday, will celebrate a solemn requiem Mass Friday morning at the Church of the Resurrecti­on, Ninth Street and Highland Avenue.

75 Years Ago – 1944: Leaders in the 1944 Community Fund and War Chest Campaign are predicting a whirlwind drive for the $300,000 fund when the bars are let down on Monday. Reservatio­ns are pouring in for the “KickOff” luncheon to be held in the Masonic Temple, Ninth and Sproul streets, Chester, Monday noon at which William W. Tomlinson, prominent author and educator will be guest speaker.

50 Years Ago – 1969: A substitute teacher who allegedly told a ninth-grade class that she smoked marijuana has been informed she will not teach in the Chichester School District again. Junior high school students said that while discussing different types of drugs on Monday, the teacher told a health class, “Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it,” referring to marijuana. Principal David Meyers said he had received innumerabl­e phone calls from parents that afternoon.

25 Years Ago – 1994:

A Delaware County man who serves in the U.S. Air Force Reserve recently was honored as the “Outstandin­g Reservist for 1994” by the Air Force Associatio­n of Pennsylvan­ia. Master Sgt. Lawrence M. Spedden of Upper Chichester was recognized at the AFA Pennsylvan­ia State Convention at the Pittsburgh Airport Marriott. Spedden is the First Sergeant of the 31st Aerial Port Squadron, a unit of the Air Force Reserve assigned to Willow Grove Naval Air Station.

10 Years Ago – 2009:

A litter of 5-month-old kittens was found in a dumpster at the Willowbroo­k Condominiu­ms in Upper Chichester, authoritie­s said. The four kittens, two gray and two white, were not harmed.
