Book and Bake Sale and other fall programs at Prospect Park Library

PROSPECT PARK >> The Prospect Park Library Fall book, bake and DVD sale will preview on Friday, Oct. 25, from 7 to 9 p.m. The sale will continue on Saturday, Oct. 26, from 9 a.m. to

1 p.m. People are encouraged to come early for the best selections of adult and children’s books and magazines, including DVD bargains. A homemade baked goods table will also be available.

A free “Fall–Fun” program will be held on Saturday, Oct.

27. Children of all ages may stop in anytime from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for fall-themed activities and crafts. Make sure to be at the library at 10 a.m. and meet the new police chief, for a special “Hail to the Chief” story time. Kids who wear Halloween costumes may also get a free treat.

Delaware County Library System to be honored as 2019 Community Champion of Adult Literacy.

CHESTER >> The Delaware County Library System will be honored at the 7th Annual “Champions of Adult Literacy” Quizzo Fundraiser on Wednesday, Oct. 23, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Harrah’s Philadelph­ia Casino & Racetrack in Chester.

DCLC’s annual Champions of Adult Literacy event honors community members who champion literacy and who support the Literacy Council’s efforts to provide free services to adults who are improving their basic skills, preparing for their high school equivalenc­y, or learning English as a Second Language

The Delaware County Library System and its 26 affiliated libraries partner with the Literacy Council by hosting Literacy Council classes, by providing a welcoming space for adult literacy students and their volunteer tutors, by offering online and in-person literacy resources, and by providing a representa­tive to serve on the Literacy Council’s Board of Directors.

“We are thrilled and honored to be selected as a community champion,” said Catherine Bittle, director of the Delaware County Library System. “Our mission at Delaware County Libraries is to focus on serving the needs of our community, to provide a versatile, welcoming, safe space, and to promote life-long learning. We are pleased that we can support and partner with impactful organizati­ons such as the Delaware County Literacy Council.”

Friends of Swarthmore Public Library hold fall book sale

SWARTHMORE >> The fall Friends of Swarthmore Public Library Book and Bake Sale will be held November 7, 8 and

9, and will feature a huge array of excellent books, movies, music, sheet music, and puzzles that will satisfy a wide spectrum of interests and age groups. A large and varied array of homemade baked goods will also be available for sale.

The Book & Bake Sale hours are Thursday, Nov. 7, 9 a.m. to

7 p.m.; Friday, Nov. 8, 9 a.m. to

7 p.m.; and Saturday, Nov. 9, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Friday is half-price day. Saturday is Bag Day, with most books costing $5 per bag, and rare and boutique books costing $20 per bag. Tinicum Memorial Library hosts programs on Diabetes, gardening, Medicare

TINICUM >> Tinicum Memorial Library, 620 Seneca Ave., Essington, will host a program on “Indoor Gardening For All Seasons” with Penn State Master Gardener Joe Daniels 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19.

The program will give ideas for those who don’t have the room or time to garden outside and will explore the newest trends in houseplant­s to make interiors a healthier and more beautiful place.

Tinicum Library will also host a program, “Choosing and Changing Your Medicare Plan” 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 21. The program, presented by Dan Yody, will answer the following questions: “How are Advantage and Supplement­s different? When can you change your plan?” People can also learn about programs to save them money.

The library will also present a program, in conjunctio­n with Giant Food Stores, on Diabetes awareness, 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2. November is Diabetes Awareness Month and nutritioni­st Rabiya Bower will discuss the basics of diabetes management and carbohydra­te counting. Participan­ts can learn some tips and tricks for managing blood sugar, as well as some low-carb recipes everyone in the family can enjoy. Registrati­on is required.

Springfiel­d Township Library resumes kids’ programs

SPRINGFIEL­D >> Programs for children will resume on Monday, Oct. 28 at Springfiel­d Township Library, 70 Powell Road. Programs, running until Dec. 6, are for children ages birth through grade school and will include books, music, STEAM activities and much more. On Monday, Nov. 4, at 6:30 p.m., Springfiel­d Library will host a Star Party for adults and school-aged children. Everyone is welcome.

Ridley Township Library hosts programs on fraud, meditation

RIDLEY TOWNSHIP >> Ridley Township Library and Resource Center will host a program on “Identity Theft and Fraud Protection for Seniors” 1 p.m,. Wednesday, Oct. 16. Presented by Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union, the seminar is designed to help seniors prevent financial mistreatme­nt crimes. Identity theft, lottery scams, health care scams and more will be discussed, as well as what people can do if they become a victim. Chris Marrone, the Financial Crimes Investigat­or for FMFCU, will be the presenter.

The library will also offer a special program 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19 during the regular Meditation Saturday event. Michael Bailey, who teaches “Cool Breeze Meditation,” will join Rich Conti for a special program. This type of meditation teaches resting in natural well being, and relaxing mind and body. The meditation event will be held in the library’s Quiet Room, and space is limited.

CONCORD >> Musical Maps of Meaning: Musical Illustrati­ons will be presented 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7. Many works

of music have their origins and inspiratio­ns from stories, poems or visual artworks. Pianist and composer Jennifer Campbell will explain how composers create musical illustrati­ons of these other art forms. Registrati­on is required.

A Spotted Lanternfly informatio­n session by a Penn State Master gardener will held 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12 to teach about the invasive

species, the threat it poses to our area, and how you can help prevent its spread.

The movie matinee for adults will feature the film “Yesterday” at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13. Chair Yoga will be offered 10:30 a.m., Mondays, Nov. 18 and Nov. 25.

The afternoon book will be reading and

discussing Educated by Tara Westover 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20. The evening book club will read and discuss The Twelve Tribes of Hattie by Ayana Mathis at 6:30 p.m.

Lansdowne Public Library hosts murder mystery, comic con

club LANSDOWNE >> The Lansdowne Public Library will host a murder mystery event 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, after the library closes to solve riddles and piece together clues. The event costs $10 which will include a full meal. Participan­ts must be over 18-years-old to play due to graphic content.
