Hamilton, Smith qualify for PIAA golf championship
Delaware County will have two golfers in the PIAA championships next week at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York.
Radnor’s Jack Hamilton and Strath Haven’s Grace Smith were the lone golfers to advance out of the East Regional tournament Monday at Golden Oaks Golf Club in Fleetwood.
Hamilton, a junior, carded a 3-over par 75 to finish in a nine-way tie for
14th place in the boys Class
3A tournament. The top 26 golfers in 3A advanced to the state championships. Hamilton recorded 11 pars and two birdies. He birdied No. 11 (par 5) and No.
13 (par 3) in advancing to states, which will be held Oct. 21-22.
Cardinal O’Hara senior Joseph Taggart shot a 12over 84 to finish in a tie for
43rd. He is the first O’Hara golfer to qualify for the regional tourney.
Conestoga junior Morgan Lofland shot a 5-under par
67 to defeat Spring Grove junior Karl Frisk and Dallas sophomore Logan Paczewski.by one stroke.
Smith recorded an 8-over
80 to finish in a two-way tie for 12th place in the girls Class 3A tournament. The top 13 golfers qualified for the PIAA championship. Smith recorded 10 pars. She’s also part of the Strath Haven team that will be in the team competition next week.
Haverford’s Riley Quartermain missed advancing by two strokes. She carded a
10-over 82 to finish in a twoway tie for 18th place. Elizabeth Beek of Wissahickon fired a 6-under 66 to win the regional title.
Girls Tennis
Samma Zahran’s outstanding first foray into high school varsity tennis just got a little better.
The freshman from Cardinal O’Hara won twice to capture the Catholic League Class 3A singles title.
Zahran defeated Archbishop Carroll’s Celia Frohner, 6-0, 6-1, in the first round and scored a
6-3, 4-6, 6-3, victory over Archbishop Ryan’s Laurie Flemm in the second round to win the championship and advance to the District 12 tourney Oct. 24 at Legacy.
In the District tournament: DOWNINGTOWN WEST 3, RADNOR 2 >> The third-seeded Whippets used a three-set victory at third doubles to knock off second-seeded Radnor in the semifinals.
The Whippets will play top seeded Unionville for the title Tuesday, while the Raiders will play for third place against Harriton. All four teams have qualified for the PIAA tournament.
Divya Kalmady and Lili Zebluim pulled out a 6-3,
2-6, 6-3 victory over Grace Frigerio and Mia Xie to give the Whippets the victory.
Kanon Ciarrocchi defeated Tanya Pant, 6-0, 6-0, at first singles and Annie 1 team Burton and Caroline EggKrings beat Alyssa Dehart and Kaitlyn Pacheo, 6-0, 3-6, 6-3, at first doubles to lead Radnor.
In nonleague action: ACADEMY PARK 3, POTTSTOWN 2 >> Victoria Scott and Gwyneth Bevans pulled out a 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 victory at first doubles to help the Knights (8-9, 6-0 Del Val) close out the season on a winning note.
Akiama Roger to third singles for AP, while Chanel Geohaghan and Shaniya Robinson won in straight sets at second doubles.
Girls Soccer
Elizabeth Stokes recorded a hat trick to pace John W. Hallahan to a 4-2 victory over Cardinal O’Hara in the first round of the Catholic League playoffs.
Eighth-seeded Hallahan will take on top-seeded Archbishop Ryan in Thursday’s quarterfinals.
Makalia Ley and Aylssa Crognale scored for the Lions, while Julia Mirarchi made eight saves in goal.
Boys Soccer
Keith Tobey and Adam Louricki had one goal and one assist as Ridley beat Chichester, 8-2, in nonleague action.
Christian Praizner, Anthony Dueh, Eric Christensen, Robbie Geddes, Fernando Ibarra and Patrick Rudy also scored for the Green Raiders.
Mazen Sayed and Zachery Bardwell had the goals for the Eagles.
Field Hockey
Carly Hynd recorded the 100th point of her career with an assist on Kate Galica’s goal to lead Conestoga to a 2-0 victory over Cardinal O’Hara.
Chloe Ziegler scored the first goal for the Pioneers, while the defense did not surrender a shot on goal to allow Katie Clemson to record her 11th shutout of the season.
Gianna Travia made three saves in goal for the Lions. RUSTIN 4, STRATH HAVEN 3 >> The Golden Knights scored three of the last four goals including the winner in overtime.
Milly Pelligrini, Kaitlin Nieczpiel and Sophie Green scored for the Panthers. Green’s goal sent the game into overtime. Sarah McAndrews had an assist. C.B. EAST 4, ARCHBISHOP CARROLL 1 >> East, one of the top Class 3A teams in District 1, scored twice in each half.
Julia Kingsbury drilled home a pass from Carleigh Connors to get Carroll on the board in the second half. Goalie Grace DiMascio made 16 saves to keep it close.
Boys Water Polo
Matej Sekulic poured in five goals and Ryan LaRocca added two goals and six assists to help Haverford School get past Wilson, 13-7.
David Gobora contributed three goals and five steals and Bram Schork had one goal, two assists and seven steals.
