100Years Ago – 1919: There appears in the Times today a picture of Gen. John J. Pershing, depicting some of his hobbies. From time to time the Times will run a series of intimate pictures of noted Americans, giving their fellow citizens an opportunity of getting acquainted with the habits and hobbies of famous folks.
75Years Ago – 1944: Say bud, gotta match? No? Remember the days, only six or eight weeks ago, when every man had at least five books of matches bulging his pockets, and would give you one to avoid the bulge? How about the tobacconist, the restaurateur, the grocer, and all the other hood (good) people who would hand out two or three books of matches? Been wonderin’ what happened to their kind hearts? The match shortage is definitely bad now and according to match jobbers, it will remain bad and continue to get worse before the year ends as the paper and other raw material shortage has hit the manufacturers hardest.
50Years Ago – 1969: The United Community Fund of Chester and Vicinity’s manufacturing and service division – the first division to report in the 1970campaign – contributed $31,827 at the report meeting Thursday to top its $30,000quota. Chester Lions Club was host for the meeting at the Central YMCA and 21of the
27plants that make up the division headed by Steve P. Pahides, a Delaware County National Bank vice president, equated or exceeded their quotas.
25Years Ago – 1994: Four uniformed officers and the entire detective bureau of Upper Darby police have received commendations from Police Superintendent Vincent Ficchi. Awarded commendations of merit were patrolmen Dennis McNamara, Vincent Massi, Robert Bales and Joseph Dougherty. In addition, a Distinguished Unit Citation was awarded to the Investigations Division for its accomplishments in this “extraordinary year to date.”
10Years Ago – 2009: The Chester supermarket project is still on the table despite being pushed to the back burner during the protracted state budget negotiations. The city has been without a supermarket since
2001, and Chester Housing Authority officials had hoped to wrap up negotiations with Brandywine Real Estate Management Services Corp, a Chadds Ford-based developer, by a June 30deadline. The developer intended to build a full-service, union shopping mart.
