Two police officers injured in Radnor blaze
RADNOR >> Two police officers were sent to the hospital following an apartment fire in a complex on Morris Road and Sugartown Road in Radnor Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.
Firefighters were dispatched to the complex Delmont Village Apartments complex just after 12:30 p.m.. A resident said that when he turned on his heat his apartment filled with smoke. He notified the fire department and police police arrived to evacuate the building. First responders encountered smoky conditions and two officers were taken to the hospital.
“Two Radnor police officers arrived and found a smoke condition, they went in and found the building had already been evacuated,” said Radnor Police Lt. Shawn Dietrich. “They will be okay, they just had some smoke inhalation.”
Radnor Fire Chief Joseph Maguire said the fire appeared to be originate in the heater room and spread up into the attic of the complex.
Firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the heater room and a small section of the attic before it spread to the complex.
“It appears to have started in the heater room above the balcony and went up above the ceiling and started to race under the roof,” said Maguire. “Firefighters were able to get ahead of the fire and contain it.”
Residents huddled under umbrellas as they were for firefighters to give the all clear. Crew had the blaze under control in thirty minutes.
Radnor, Berwyn and Newtown Fire Companies responded to the blaze. Narberth ambulance also assisted.
