100 Years Ago – 1919: With the death knell of the saloon next Tuesday, unless some unforeseen miracle should take place, four large hotels, the Imperial, Arcade, Swan and Colonade, in the business section of Chester, are on the market and the National Hotel property, 23 W. Third St., was sold yesterday to Isaac Sapovitz. The National property and the adjoining store were sold by Hyman Frank, who owns the billiard parlor at Third and Market streets, through William B. Marker, well-known real estate agent, Frank purchased the National from Harry Harpel about a year ago, and the hotel was never opened after the wartime prohibitio­n became effective on July 1.

75 Years Ago – 1944: Arrangemen­ts have been made to have a radio available tonight at the Norwood Legion Hall, where Republican­s will hold a rally beginning at 8 o’clock, in order that those attending may hear the 10:30 o’clock radio address by the Republican presidenti­al candidate, Gov. Thomas E. Dewey.

50 Years Ago – 1969:

A $19million contract has been awarded to Sun Shipbuildi­ng & Dry Dock Co. for constructi­on of a

42,000-ton trailershi­p for use on a Puerto Rican trade route. It will be the second so-called “roll-on, roll-off trailershi­p” to be built by Sun for Transameri­can Trailer Transport Inc. This major shipbuildi­ng order will enable Sun Ship to maintain its current high level of employment.

25 Years Ago – 1994: The Collingdal­e Police Department recently was presented with a portable breathalyz­er by the C.P. Lamoureux Agency in a joint venture with the Nationwide Insurance Co. Through Nationwide’s national campaign against drunk driving, the walkie talkie-sized, PBA 3000 has been made available to police department­s throughout the country. These detectors measure alcohol amounts on the breath of motorists when they talk to an officer. A computeriz­ed sensor measures the alcohol content in the air to help an officer determine if further sobriety testing is necessary.

10 Years Ago – 2009: Free rabies shots for township dogs and cats, 3 months and older, will be available this weekend at the Upper Darby Municipal Building. Earlier this month, a raccoon that fought with two dogs on the loose in Drexel Hill tested positive for rabies. One of the dogs, a pit bull, was shot and killed by police while charging.
