Radnor advances to PIAA team tennis quarterfin­als

Bridget Dougherty and Lucy Hederick won at second and third singles, respective­ly, as Radnor topped Parkland, 4-1, in the first round of the PIAA Class 3A team tennis tournament.

Radnor, the third seed from District 1, advances to take on District 7 champ Peters Township Friday morning at 8 at Hershey Racquet Club in the semifinals. Peters swept Altoona, 5-0, Tuesday.

Grace Frigerio and Mia Xie picked up a point at second doubles for Radnor. Kanon Ciarrocchi won by forfeit at first singles.

In other PIAA Class 3A firstround action:

DOWNINGTOW­N WEST 5, CARDINAL O’HARA 0 >> The Whippets won all five matches in straight sets to bring O’Hara’s team season to a close.

Samma Zahran put at a fight at first singles before falling to Tanya Pant, 6-2, 6-1.

Zahran and teammates Caroline Lynch and Mary Clare Hayden will go for District 12 titles Wednesday at Legacy. Zahran won the Catholic League Class 3A singles title last week. Lynch and Hayden topped Archbishop Carroll’s Mary Finley and Bridget DiCarlo, 6-1, 7-5, to win the Catholic League Class 3A doubles title Monday to complete a sweep of the league championsh­ip events (team, singles, doubles).

Golf

Strath Haven’s Grace Smith fired an 8-over par 80 for the second day in a role to place ninth in the PIAA girls Class 3A championsh­ip at Heritage Hills Golf Resort Tuesday with a 16-over par two-day total of 160. Wissahicko­n’s Elizabeth Beek defeated Lower Merion’s Sydney Yermish in a playoff to win the individual crown.

Smith will try to help the Panthers

win the team title Wednesday.

On the boys side, Radnor’s Jack Hamilton bounced back with a solid the second round Tuesday to finish in a tie for 22nd in Class 3A.

Hamilton fired a 5-over par 76 to finish with a 14-over two-day total of 156. Carson Bacha of Central York carded a 4-under par 67 for the second day in a row to record an 8-under par 134 and take a three-stroke victory over Meadville’s Ryan Perry (137).

Boys Soccer

Cole Levis had a goal and an assist as No. 4 seed Delco Christian made quick work of No. 5 Calvary Christian, 5-0, in the first round of the District 1 Class A tournament.

Jack Dill, Jason Woo, Alexander Nekoumond and Max Cardone also scored, and Josiah Bronkema made six saves.

Also in the District 1 Class A tournament:

CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 4, PLUMSTEAD CHRISTIAN 0 >> Grant Sareyka scored twice, and Jesse Brittain and Moses Uzele, via a beautiful free kick, also scored as the third-seeded Crusaders advanced. Sam Geathers posted the clean sheet with 11 saves.

Boys Water Polo

Ryan LaRocca dominated rival Malvern Prep in a 22-8 Haverford School win.

LaRocca tallied four goals, five assists and four drawn ejections on the offensive end as well as five steals and two blocks on defense.

Matej Sekulic scored four goals, Caleb Cannon and Luka Sekulic added three goals and an assist each and David Gobora augmented his two goals with five assists and 11 steals. Koby Degenhardt made seven saves in goal for Haverford (22-1).

Girls Water Polo

Jovana Sekulic scored six goals go to with an assist in leading the Churchwome­n to a 12-10 decision over Penn Charter. Margo LeRoux had two goals and two assists, while Abby Bonner scored and added three assists. Alex Swanepole and Mekhi Wilson tallied a goal and an assist apiece.

Boys Hockey

Nick Dignazio scored on the first shot of his career and added an assist to help Strath Haven open the season with a 6-2 victory over Conestoga late Monday night.

Brett Miller dished out three assists for the first three-point night of his career. Walter Clauss, Josh Peabody, Thomas Sullivan and Evan Spanier also had one goal and one assist. Will Graham stopped 24 shots in goal.
