A disappointing political sign of the times

-

To the Times:

Once again myself and many others are requesting that the political signs littering our highways are removed. It is especially disappointing to observe that much of this “litter” is the responsibility of law enforcement officials, including sheriffs and judges, who direct the driving public to maintain eye contact with the highway! It is apparent that certain townships forbid these signs at our beautiful well-managed roundabouts while other roundabouts are primary targets with no limitations. It’s the same story every election cycle.

What I find ironic is that many municipalities, particularly in rural areas, often ban road signs and billboards because they are both a distraction and an eyesore. Yet, what these political signs amount to is thousands of tiny billboards that litter our beautiful country roads. There seems to be no regulation of them whatsoever. This is doubly ironic since these signs advertise for some of the same lawmakers who wouldn’t dream of allowing companies to advertise in such a way. Imagine the outcry if McDonald’s, Walmart, or any other company just started plopping advertising signs indiscriminately all over our roads. There would be an outcry among the public, as well as the politicians. This seems to be yet another case of “Do as I say, not as I do” from the political class.

Many persons express similar disappointment especially concerning this unsightly signage that often remains long after the elections. Others have even chosen not to vote for individuals that litter our beautiful county highways. We therefore respectfully request that these non productive promotions are removed ASAP.
