McGaughey’s birthday one for record book

-

Widener quarterback Sean McGaughey did not wait until after Saturday’s game against Albright in Reading to celebrate his 21st birthday.

He decided to hold a party on George L. Shirk Field.

McGaughey set the program record for touchdown passes in a game and nearly broke the mark for passing yards in a contest to help the Pride snap a three-game losing streak with a 59-34 victory over Albright.

The seven threw seven touchdown passes to top the record of six that was jointly shared by Mike Warker, Chris Haupt and Seth Klein. McGaughey also threw for 453 yards, which was shy of Haupt’s record of

470 against Waynesburg in the 2011 ECAC South Atlantic Bowl.

McGaughey completed 23 of 41 passes with two interceptions to get Widener (4-4 overall, 3-3 MAC) back to .500. Ty Holbert was on the receiving end of six of those completions for 184 yards and two touchdowns. James Gillespie caught eight passes for 140 yards and three scores.

McGaughey threw one touchdown pass in the first quarter, two in the second and three in the third before setting the record with a 26yard strike to Ryan Gallagher with

10:26 to go in the game. He needs

196 yards in his last two games to become the sixth player in school history to throw for 3,000 yards in a season and three touchdown passes to become the sixth quarterback with 30 TD passes in a season. The

453 yards raised his career total to

6,262.

McGaughey threw three touchdown passes as the Pride scored 28 consecutive points in the third and fourth quarters to break the game open. The burst extended a 24-14 lead to 52-14.

WILLIAMSON 14, NEW JERSEY WARRIORS 3 >> Freshmen Nick Layden and Michael Moore stole the show on senior day, at least on offense.

Layden, a rookie from Ridley, threw for one touchdown and ran for another, and Moore, an Interboro grad, caught a touchdown pass and rushed for 100 yards to help secure a winning season for the second year in a row for the Mechanics (4-2).

Layden and Moore hooked up on a 10-yard scoring pass in the second quarter to get the Mechanics on the board. Layden then sprinted eight yards for a TD on fourth-andtwo in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.

Senior All-America tackle Quincy Williams paced the defense with 14 tackles, which included three for loss. He also forced a fumble that stymied a potential scoring drive by the Warriors. Fellow senior Da’Shawn Wooden had five tackles and recovered two fumbles. Junior Chris Carney made seven tackles and also recovered a pair of fumbles.

Williamson closes out the season at home Saturday against CAPP Academy.
