Irish clear first hurdle in quest for another PAISAA volleyball title

Notre Dame began its quest for a seventh straight PAISAA volleyball title with a convincing 3-0 victory over George School Monday.

The second-seeded Irish will host thirdseede­d Agnes Irwin in Wednesday’s semifinals. The Owls defeated Springside Chestnut Hill Academy, 3-0.

Grace Clark, Maddie Schultz and Keegan Bradley combined for 16 kills in the 25-4, 25-10,

25-17 victory for Notre Dame.

The Irish won both regular-season matches with the Owls, taking the first, 3-0, and the second

3-1.

Field Hockey

Mia Leonhardt helped Notre Dame get off to a fast start and cruise to a 6-0 Inter-Ac League victory over Springside Chestnut Hill Academy.

Leonhardt had the assists on a pair of goals by Georgie Gorelick that propelled the Irish to a

3-0 halftime lead. Leonhardt tallied twice in the second half to close out the scoring.

Vivi Trumpbour added one goal and one assist and Meghan Mitchell also scored for the Irish

(15-4-1, 7-1-1). Goalie Paige Kieft made two saves to post the shutout.

Notre Dame is the No. 3 seed in the PAISAA tournament, which begins Friday. The Irish host Penn Charter. Episcopal Academy is seeded second and entertains Springside Chestnut Hill in the second round.

Boys Soccer

Daniel Wachs and Ethan Wilner scored in the second half to lift Barrack Hebrew Academy to a 2-1 victory over Phelps in the TriCounty League semifinals.

Wachs scored in the 50th minute and Wilner converted a pass from Abe Wachas in the 73rd minute to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead. Hayden Ufberg made one save in goal to get the win.

Boys Hockey

Daniel Quartapell­a scored two goals to pace Haverford to a 7-1 victory over Conestoga in ICSHL Central action.

Quartapell­a scored 6:36 into the game to get the Fords on the board and found the back of the net again midway through the second period for a 4-0 lead. Alex Gattone added one goal and two assists, Jacob Orazi dished out three assists and Jagur McClelland handed out a pair of helpers. Goalie Tyler Cassidy stopped four of the five shots he faced.
