100 Years Ago – 1919: Distinguished by the presence of prominent Pennsylvania statesmen, war heroes and citizens, the new Armory of the Pennsylvania Military College is being dedicated today with appropriate ceremonies. John Wanamaker, chairman of the Board of Trustees of the college, arrived early and preceding the exercises inspected the handsome new building, with other members of the board.

75 Years Ago – 1944: “Tom,” nondescript, pug-ugly rat killer, was back in his bailiwick at the “ball park” area of Sun Ship today, licking his chops and humping his back in feline satisfaction. For a stray with a strictly alley cat heritage he hasn’t done bad. It was several months ago that Tom found his way into the Sun Shipyard and took refuge in the quarters of the men who build stacks – No. 30 Department. Last Friday Tom was suffering from a bad case of cat distemper and it looked like curtains for

the killer. Department leader Frank Gibson and other stack-building friends chipped in hospital funds and Tom has made a complete recovery and is ready to renew his war against rats.

50 Years Ago – 1969: Rose Valley Borough Council has approved the installation of an overhead street lamp at the entrance to the Old Mill on Rose Valley Road opposite the Hedgerow Theater. The electric company will determine how soon the light is installed. Council also approved the Rose Valley Nurseries to do the snow removal and cinder the borough against this year.

25 Years Ago – 1994: Graceland Memorial Cemetery in Yeadon looks like an open field where residents’ grassy back yards meld into the historic land. But the 220-year-old burial ground for some 1,600 Civil War veterans has not looked better in years. A six-month cleanup effort culminated in a rededication ceremony

Saturday afternoon, coinciding with local Veterans Day observances. Marking completion of the joint project between the borough and Yeadon Public Library, a ceremony witnessed by about 50 people included a Civil War re-enactment, gun salute and Color Guard activities.

10 Years Ago – 2009: Four years ago, residents on both sides of the deer fence expressed their opinions regarding a proposal to control the white-tail population within Rose Valley Borough. The debate will continue Tuesday night. A public meeting will be held to receive comment regarding the possible harvesting of deer on borough land. The discussion was prompted by a unanimous recommendation from the Environmental Advisory Council (EAC) to begin a management program in the Saul and Long Point wildlife sanctuaries and open-space tract in Todmorden.
