Laverty’s triple extends Widener’s undefeated run

A 3-pointer by Connor Laverty gave Widener the spark it needed to break open a tight game and stay undefeated with an 81-71 victory over Farmingdal­e State Saturday.

The Pride went on to open up a 42-35 lead at halftime and led by as many as 17 points. Widener

(7-0) is off to its best start since the 2007-08 season when it won its first eight games.

With the game tied, 1515, Laverty’s triple started an 8-2 run that put the Pride in front for good.

Kenny Lewis posted his second double-double of the season with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Jared Peters added 16 points, while Laverty and Pat Holden chipped in with 12 points each for the Pride.

UMBC 85, DREXEL 60 » K.J. Jackson had 19 points as the Retrievers rolled over the Dragons.

Daniel Akin added a career-high 18 points, while Dimitrije Spasojevic chipped in 15. Jack Schwietz had 10 points and six assists for Maryland-Baltimore County (5-3).

Sam Green had a career-high 16 points for the Dragons (4-4). Zach Walton added 13 points, and James Butler had nine rebounds and three blocks.

SAINT FRANCIS (PA.) 79, SAINT JOSEPH’S 63 » A local guy helped do the Hawks in. Mark Flagg, a 6-9 junior from Pennsbury, collected 11 points and nine rebounds for the Red Flash.

Keith Braxton paced SFU with 26 points, seven boards and four assists. Isaiah Blackmon added 19 points and 12 rebounds.

Ryan Daly (Archbishop Carroll All-Delco) poured in 23 points to lead the Hawks. Lorenzo Edwards chipped in with 14 points, four rebounds and three assists.

UTICA COLLEGE 78, NEUMANN

60 » The Pioneers put up 46 points in the second half to advance to the championsh­ip game of the Holiday Inn Downtown Rochester tournament. Utica will play host Rochester in the final at 3 p.m.

Cold shooting plagued the Knights. Neumann shot 33 percent overall in each half and just 25 percent from three-point land in the second half. Anthony Mitchell led the Knights with 18 points and eight rebounds. He was the only Neumann player in double figures.

Women’s Basketball

La Salle is on quite a roll. The Explorers made a season-high 13 three-point field goals and had 19 assists on 27 baskets to extend their winning streak to five games with a 74-58 victory over UMBC in the opening round of the Navy Classic.

La Salle (6-1) takes on the host Midshipmen for the title Sunday at 3:15 p.m.

Claire Jacobs paced a balanced attack with 14 points. Amy Jacobs added

13 points, and Jordon Lewis 10.

Bailey Greenberg paced Drexel with 16 points and eight rebounds. She is four points shy of moving into

12th place on the career scoring list. Mariah Leonard chipped in with a career-high 11 points. Kayla Bacon also set career highs for points (eight) and assists (four). With her second helper, she became the fourth player in program history with 400 career assists.
