100 Years Ago – 1919:
Moonshiners have commenced operations on the west side of Chester and in the county. This was the starling disclosure made in a story related by a well-known citizen this afternoon, the informant admitting that he had even “sampled” their product. Furthermore, the whiskey is a genuine kind possessing a powerful kick. Price? Well, if you are a good businessman it can be had at a bargain – $5a quart.
75 Years Ago – 1944: A free-for-all at a Chester veterans club was quelled by a squad of nine policemen shortly after 12:30 a.m. today; 11 civilians and servicemen being arrested and two sailors sustaining injuries that required treatment at Chester Hospital. Only one fine was imposed as a result of the riot – on a 24-year-old East Fifth Street girl for disorderly conduct – which swept the headquarters of Capt. Lynch-Sgt. Brush Post 1521, VFW, at 128E. Sixth St.
50 Years Ago – 1969: The Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission adopted a 15-year comprehensive regional plan and sanctioned applications of federal funds for projects at Philadelphia International Airport and Aston. The DVRPC approved Philadelphia’s application for federal aid in connection with a $15-million runway construction project currently under way at the airport and located entirely within Delaware County. Aston Township’s 2-year project will consist of various studies including economic analysis, population, land use, transportation, community facilities and management of utilities.
25 Years Ago – 1994: The Haverford School Board voted Thursday night to join several county school districts in an application to the state Board of Education for amendments to the agreement with which they sponsor Delaware County Community College. The amendment would authorize district tuition charges to those residents attending DCCC.
10 Years Ago – 2009:
State Sen. Dominic Pileggi, R-9of Chester, officially passed the torch of the Chester Republican Party to city Councilwoman Marrea Walker-Smith during a well-attended public celebration held Thursday evening at city GOP headquarters. Walker-Smith,
38, is the first woman and African American to lead the party. “I bring a whole new sense of energy and have a lot of alliances within the community,” she said.
