Taylor extends game, carries Chester to win

Akeem Taylor came through when Chester needed him most.

Taylor hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the game with South Philadelph­ia High to overtime, then tallied the first four points of the extra session to put the Clippers up for good in a 79-74 nonleague victory.

Taylor set his career-high as a Clipper with 24 points. (He’d had three 30-point games as a sophomore at Chester Charter School for the Arts). Rahmee Gilbert added a career-best 23 points, and Fareed Burton and Karell Watkins added 13 points each. All the points came from Chester’s starting five.

Southern took the lead into halftime thanks to a 30-13 edge in the second quarter, but Chester stormed back with a 27-11 third quarter, powered by 10 points from Gilbert and nine from Taylor. Gilbert was 11-for-13 from the line, and Chester (4-1) converted on eight of its 12 trips to the charity stripe in the extra session.

In other nonleague action: RIDLEY 48, HAVERFORD 38 >> Josh Hagan scored 14 points, and Josh Howard added 13 points as the Green Raiders rode a 10-point halftime edge to the win. Jack Grace and Malachi Williams added seven points apiece.

John Seidman led Haverford with 18 points.

BULLIS SCHOOL 75, HAVERFORD SCHOOL 52 >> Christian Clover hit three 3-pointers to tally 16 points, and Tyler Seward added 11 for the shorthande­d Fords. Rodney Rice led Bullis with 32 points.

At the Mercer Tournament: PRINCETON DAY SCHOOL 71, EPISCOPAL ACADEMY 54 >> Alex Capitano scored 12 points and the Churchmen made nine 3-pointers, but a 26-11 deficit in the second quarter was too much to overcome in falling in the seventh-place game against Western Reserve Saturday at 10 a.m.

Will Delaney and Malcolm Folk added nine points each.

Boys Hockey

Vincent Starzi’s overtime goal completed Garnet Valley’s twogoal comeback in a 4-3 win over Penncrest Friday in ICSHL Central hockey action.

Starzi’s goal 1:38 into the extra session was unassisted. Nicholas Port, who added two assists, scored at 15:19 of the third to send the game to the extra session. Dylan Kouba also scored in the third, erasing three second-period goals from Penncrest. Josh Juliano stopped 28 shots for Garnet Valley.

Jackson Wickman, Kain Walker (assist) and Van Evans scored in the second for the Lions. Gannon Walker made 36 saves.

Also in the Central League: HAVERFORD 5, STRATH HAVEN 1 >> Tyler Cassidy stopped 22 shots, his shutout spoiled only in the final minute by an Adam Omrod goal.

Callen Moran scored twice, Daniel Quartapell­a added a goal and three assists and Quinn Hawley added two helpers for the Fords. Jagur McClelland and Alex Gattone also scored in the third period to salt the game away for Haverford. RIDLEY 3, LOWER MERION 2 >> Ron Higgins’ goal at 12:31 of the third proved to be the game-winner.

Higgins and Auston McCullough had a goal and an assist each for the Green Raiders, who led from the time Ben Salmieri put them up with 4:08 gone in the first period. Nick Guiliano made the offense stand up with 34 saves in net. SPRINGFIEL­D 6, RADNOR 2 >> Chad

Ruppert scored twice in the first period as three opening-stanza goals led the Cougars to victory.

Zach Crain, Ryan Kertis and Christophe­r Barrett had a goal and an assist each, and Ryan Zagrocki scored the other goal for Springfiel­d. Luca DiMarcanto­nio stopped 20 shots in goal.

Dominick Laudicina and Lyric Gibson scored for Radnor, while Haris Brotman made 37 saves.

In nonleague action:

SUN VALLEY 9, ARCHBISHOP CARROLL 0 >> Nate McGinnis scored in each of the first two periods and added three assists to a third-period deluge that resulted to seven Vanguard’s goals.

Julian Diehl scored twice, Nate Benz had a goal and two helpers and Brian States and Hayden McGinnis added one and one each for the Vanguards.

Girls Hockey

Zoe Muettertie­s scored three goals and two assists, and Sophia Muettertie­s added two and two as Radnor routed Conestoga, 11-2.

Miya Slaim (two goals, two assists), Ella Kolbert (two goals, one assist) and Caitlin Fram and Annie Burton (goal, two assists each) also had multi-point games for the Raiders.

PENNCREST-HAVEN 5, W.C. EAST 1 >> Kalia Booth scored twice in the third period, and Kristina Sullivan added a goal and an assist for P-H. Rosalie Midgette and Annika Sullivan also scored for Penncrest-Haven.

Girls Basketball

Ridley continued its hot start to the 2019-20 campaign.

Lindsay Boyd scored 12 points to lead the Green Raiders to their fifth straight win, a 45-21 decision over Haverford.

Dakota McCaughan pitched in with 11 points and made three

3-point field goals. Shannen Hinchey tossed in nine points for Ridley.

Chiara McGillivra­y paced the Fords with six points.

In the Bicentenni­al League: MAST CHARTER 42, DELCO CHRISTIAN 35 >> Caitlyn Goneau tallied 19 points and Emily Smith chipped in with 12 for the Knights, who outscorted MaST in the second half,

23-18.
