Hawkins, Thomas have Haverford School sprinting to gold

Over the shortest distances Saturday, there was no stopping Haverford School’s sprinters.

Daiyaan Hawkins and Kevin Thomas dominated the 60-meter dash and hurdles, respective­ly, at the Track and Field Coaches Associatio­n of Greater Philadelph­ia Meet No. 2 at Lehigh.

Hawkins was first in the Division II dash, his time of 6.94 easily besting the field and qualifying for the state meet. Academy Park’s Gianni Sargent was third in a Meet of Champions time of 7.33.

In the hurdles, Thomas dashed away from the field by three tenths in 8.25 seconds, a states time. Just behind him were the Strath Haven duo of Evan Blake and Quinn Vandellos, both in states times. Fifth was Justin Robinson of Interboro in an MOC time.

Frank Brown was the other Division II winner on the track, the Radnor senior taking the mile in an MOC time of 4:33.09. Third was Paul Faggioli of Strath Haven, while

Episcopal Academy’s Owen Mailer was fourth. The Raiders also won the distance medley relay.

Jed Liu of Strath Haven won the long jump, his leap of 19 feet, 11.25 inches besting the field. Teammate Jason Stone was second in the triple jump, and Penncrest’s Daniel Munro was second in the pole vault, both meeting MOC standards. Kevin Mills of Penncrest and Zaquan Bruton of Chichester tied for third in the high jump.

Radnor’s Chris Belz made the MOC with a third-place result in the 400. Three from Delco made the MOC in a fast 200: Bryce Cooper of Episcopal in fourth, Garrett Tait of Penncrest in sixth and AP’s Ian Francis in seventh. Strath Haven added an MOC but in second place in the 4x400 relay. The Panthers’ Julian Carmichael finished fourth in the 800.

In Division I:

James Nmah bested the field in the 400 meters, the Penn Wood senior winning in a states-time of 51.49 seconds. Third was Aaron Williams of Upper Darby in an MOC time.

Chester’s 4x400 relay won the event in an MOC time of 3:33.83, with Penn Wood fourth. Garnet Valley picked up a pair of sixths via Nicholas Ha (60 dash) and Peter Zekonis (800), while Upper Darby’s George Okyne took fifth in the 200.

Girls Track

Chester’s girls didn’t just win two gold medals at the second meet of the Delaware Valley Girls Track Coaches Associatio­n meet Friday night. They won them by a mile.

Jiya Clayton took the 300-meter dash in 42.27 seconds, besting the field by more than 2.5 seconds. Third in the 300 was Haverford freshman Morgan Elliott. Taniyah Lawler’s winning time in the 600 meters, 1:42.83. She bested runnerup Hannah Barkdoll of Strath Haven by 6.01 seconds.

Upper Darby’s Kayla Thorpe added a silver medal in the shot put. Springfiel­d’s Beth Schearer was fourth in the 200, two spots ahead of Alyssa Wert, whose Garnet Valley teammate Emma Little was fourth in the 1,000. The Jags were third in the 4x200, with Strath Haven fifth.

Wrestling

Flynn Kearney (126) and Charles Maier (152) won their respective titles and Alex Sladek (138) was second to help Episcopal Academy take second in the Radnor Holiday tournament.

Kearney claimed a 10-8 victory over Penn Charter’s Jess Anderson, and Maier pinned Roman Catholic’s Mike Kerper in 2:37 to help the Churchmen finish with 295 points, a half-point behind Plymouth Whitemarsh in the quest for the team title.

Mason Brown (126) and Bobby Hydrisko (170) finished second to help host Radnor take third with 265.5 points.

Sam Reisbord (145) earned a gold medal to lead Haverford School to eighth place with 111 points.

In the Ches-Mont League championsh­ips:

Nate Brooks (106) and Ronald Weaver (195) both took home fifthplace medals as Sun Valley finished 12th at the league championsh­ips. The majority of Sun Valley’s team was competing at the Beast of the East tournament in Delaware.

Brooks pinned Downingtow­n East’s Oskar Bustos in 41 seconds to take home fifth place. Weaver pinned Robert Rosark of Avon Grove in 1:24 to claim his fifthplace medal. Henderson won the team title with 261 points.

At the Howdy Duncan Invitation­al:

All-Delco Shane McAdams won the 170-pound weight class to pace Haverford to fourth place. McAdams defeated Gabe Evans of Dover (Del.), 3-2 in the final. Teammate Stephen Lozano dropped an 9-4 decision to Isaiah Wright of Malvern Prep in the 152-pound final.
