Betley makes sure Penn has no trouble with Widener
PHILADELPHIA » Ryan Betley scored 20 points and Max Martz scored 19 with five 3-pointers as Penn beat Widener, 105-57, Saturday.
Betley and Martz combined to shoot 14 of 26 including 9 of 16 from 3-point range. The Quakers
(6-4) were 17 of 40 (42.5%) from
3-point range.
Lucas Monroe posted careerhighs with 13 points and 13 rebounds, Bryce Washington scored
11 and Devon Goodman 10 for Penn. Jared Peters led the Pride with
10 points. The game, which is Widener’s second consecutive against Division I opposition after a loss to
Lafayette Thursday, counts as an exhibition for the Pride (10-1). TEMPLE 78, RIDER 66 » Alani Moore II made five 3-pointers and scored
15 points to help the Owls end the Broncs’ five-game win streak.
All but one of Moore’s 11 came from beyond the 3-point line. Jake Forrester scored 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting, Josh Pierre-Louis scored
12, Nate Pierre-Louis 11 and Quinton Rose distributed nine assists and scored nine points.
Rider led Temple (8-3) 41-33 at intermission and extended it to 5137. But Temple took control with a
21-0 run.
LA SALLE 66, FAIRLEIGH DICKINSON

13, including both of La Salle’s
3-pointers.
DREXEL 53, NORFOLK STATE 49 » James Butler recorded 10 points and 13 rebounds to carry Drexel at the Battle of the Boardwalk tournament in Atlantic City.
Sam Green had 10 points and seven rebounds for Drexel (7-6), which ended its five-game road losing streak. Camren Wynter added six assists.
Women’s Basketball
Villanova’s Maddy Seigrist achieved a rare accomplishment Saturday. She set two records as the Wildcats downed La Salle, 7769, in Big 5 action.
Seigrist scored 41 points to set the Villanova record for points in a game by a freshman. She also broke the Tom Gola Arena mark for points in a game by a woman. It also was the second-highest game in women’s Big 5 history.
The redshirt freshman connected on 13 of 19 shots, including 6-for-10 from 3-point range to break Shelly
Pennefather’s freshman mark of 35, which had been set against Notre Dame in 1984. Seigrist also had 10 rebounds and three blocked shots.
Mary Gedaka added 15 points and seven boards, and Raven James (11 points) and Bridget Herlihy (10) also scored in double figures for Villanova (5-5, 2-1 Big 5).
Claire Jacobs tallied 25 points and Jordan Lewis had 11 for the Explorers (6-6, 0-2).
