ROOFTOP RESCUE
MOM AND THREE KIDS PLUCKED FROM ROOF OF BURNING HOME
CHESTER >> A woman and three children were rescued – plucked from the roof of their burning home in Chester – Saturday night, officials said.
City companies were alerted to a building fire with residents trapped in the 1200 block of Honan Street in the Highland Gardens section at at 11:17 p.m. Saturday. Police units first on the scene found a mother and her three children on a porch roof. Police, assisted by neighboring residents who had heard screams and smoke pouring from the home, safely removed the four persons from the porch roof. All four were transported to Crozer-Chester Medical Center.
Their conditions were not known Sunday, but none of the injuries was believed to be life-threatening.
“Just an outstanding job by the Chester Police Department and alert neighbors removing this family harm,” Chester Fire Commissioner William Rigby said in a statement.
Chester City police officers climbed to the roof and rescued four people. The four were taken to Crozir Chester Medical Center and treated for smoke inhalation.
A family dog apparently perished in the fire,.
Crews were met with fire conditions rapidly extending into the attached property on arrival. Firefighters were able to search for further occupants and had the majority of the fire under control in 45 minutes.
Under the direction of Battalion Chief Jon Ley, companies were on the scene into the early morning hours assisted by Crozer EMS and Aston Township, Upland, Parkside, Eddystone, Garden City and Woodlyn Canteen fire companies. Chester Police Officer Jeff Linowski and Delaware County CID detectives are investigating the cause of the fire.
According to a statement from Rigby, city fire companies responded to two other calls over the weekend, with fires in the 600 block of West Fifth Street and the 200 block of West 15th Street.
