100Years Ago – 1920: The operation of the Wilson line steamers between this city, Philadelph­ia and Wilmington, was discontinu­ed this morning until the ice in the river will permit the safe operations of the boats. No passengers will be carried by this line for the present. The ice in the river is worse, if anything, than it was two years ago when shipping was completely paralyzed by the heavy floew.

Years Ago – 1970: Visit the State Theater in Chester tonight at 10p.m. for the Super Fight – doors open at 8, one showing only – for Rocky Marciano vs Muhammad Ali (Cassius Clay). On film in color, tickets on sale at door. From the UPI New York Bureau: Marciano and Clay, who reigned unbeaten as champions during their eras, face each other in the ring tonight with an assist from a computer, makeup man and film editor. Their fight for a mythical all-time heavyweigh­t championsh­ip will be shown in 1,000theater­s around the country.

25 Years Ago – 1995: It was a big Mac attack last night after Glenfield Avenue residents packed a Glenolden zoning meeting only to discover that the McDonald’s Corp. was granted a continuanc­e of the hearing to consider constructi­ng a new restaurant on MacDade Boulevard. McDonald’s is requesting a special exception/ variance from the borough to demolish the residentia­l property at 514 MacDade and Glenfield Avenue, zoned R-1, and build a new store on the site. “”We have enough problems where (the McDonald’s) is located now,’’ Glenfield Avenue resident Edna Bailey said after the meeting.

10 Years Ago – 2010: When Chester Mayor Wendell N. Butler Jr. learned an anonymous donor had pledged $50,000for the city’s police department, he knew immediatel­y where the money would be spent. Butler quickly decided the funds would go toward providing each officer in the force with a new, profession­ally bound Chester Police Manual. The donation was called in to state Sen. Dominic Pileggi, R-9of Chester, who presented the check to Butler and Police Chief Floyd Lewis at a brief ceremony at city hall on Tuesday.
