Garnet Valley, Interboro win at District Duals
Being seeded 13th in the District 1 Class 3A Duals turned out to be Garnet Valley’s lucky number.
The Jaguars pulled off the biggest upset of the first round Thursday night with a 33-32 triumph over fourthseeded Council Rock North at Council Rock South High School.
Garnet Valley’s victory followed another upset as No. 10 Interboro blasted No.
7 Central Bucks East, 52-21. The victories earned both teams a spot in next Friday’s quarterfinals at Upper Dublin High School. The Jaguars take on fifth-seeded Owen J. Roberts while the Bucs face second-seeded Council Rock South. Both matches are at
6 p.m. OJ Roberts defeated Downingtown West, 47-34, while CR South beat Boyertown, 51-15.
Delco’s two other teams did not fare as well. Sun Valley, the No. 11 seed, lost to No. 6 Henderson, 59-14, while No. 14 Strath Haven fell to No. 3 Spring-Ford,
66-3.
Desmon Perry pinned Brendon Hardy in 1:36 at 170 pounds to give Garnet Valley the lead for good, 33-29.
The key match, though, came in the final bout at 182, where David Dorf dropped a
6-0 decision to Alex Roe “Even though it was a loss, David Dorf kept it to a decision, which was huge for us,” GV coach Rocco Fantazzi said. “That gave us a shot, kept us going.”
Francis Reagan (106) and Christopher Wood (138) also won by fall for GV. Daniel Husain recorded a technical fall at 126. Dillon Conlon won by major decision at 195, while Sam DiTrolio
(220), Matthew Ricci (113) both won by decision for the Jaguars.
INTERBORO 52, CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 21 >> The Bucs won 10 of the final 12 matches to pull off the upset. Interboro won seven of those matches by fall and another by major decision to score 52 of the final 61 points.
Shalom Thomas got the comeback started with a third-period fall at 285. Victor Quintilliana only needed
57 second for a pin to tie the match. Nate Shippey followed with a fall at 113 and the Bucs never trailed again.
Jacob Finley (132), Domenic D’Agopstino (152), Jerry Curran (170) and Aaron Stankiewicz (170) all won by fall. Dylan Lajudice recorded a major decision at
145, and Chase Gallo (120) and Isiah Fusaro (160) won by decision.
Fusaro’s 7-1 triumph over Marcus Chernyshev sealed the victory.
HENDERSON 58, SUN VALLEY 15 >> The sixth-seeded Warriors won nine straight matches from 126 to 195 to break it open and advance to the quarterfinals.
Ryan and Hunter Catka both recorded first-period pins for the Vanguards. Ryan Catka pinned Wyatt Hampton in 1:50 at 220 pounds and Hunter decked Ryan Caruso in 45 seconds at 285. Shane Holefelder picked up a 13-8 victory at
120.
In the Central League: UPPER DARBY 49, RADNOR 24 >> Farhan Chowdhury (113), Keito Shaw (120), Sam Kimmel 9132), Arther Odongo
(152), Isaiah Poindexter (195) and Julien Laventure (285) all won by fall for the Royals.
Shaw pinned his opponent in 20 seconds. Laventure also recorded his fall in the first period. Micahya Riley scored a 22-5 major decision at 138 pounds. LOWER MERION 51, SPRINGFIELD 27 >> The Aces racked up seven pins, three in the first four matches, and took the final three bouts to beat the Cougars.
Eddie Cullen and Adam Dib won by fall for Springfield. Cullen pinned Alan Ghosh in 55 seconds at 113 pounds and Dib decked Nate Bradway in 5:22 at 126 pounds. Ethan Scott won a 6-0 decision at 160, while Daniel Bamiteko (195) and Josh Kirkpatrick (285) received forfeit victories.
In the Inter-Ac League: MALVERN PREP 73, HAVERFORD SCHOOL 3 >> Dayton Delvisicio and Cole Deery powered the Friars over the Fords. Delviscio won by fall at 120 pounds and Deery recorded a pin at 285.
Bill Brosko recorded the only victory for the Fords with a 4-2 sudden victory in overtime at 220 pounds.
Girls Swimming
The Episcopal Academy captured the Inter-Ac League championship with a 104-65 victory over Baldwin.
For the first time in program history, the boys and girls teams finished undefeated in the same year.
Emma Lunn led off the winning 200 medley relay and 400 free relay and claimed first place in the
200 individual medley. Maisy Montgomery participated in the 400 free relay and took top honors in the 200 free. Chelsey Liu bested the competition in the 50 free and helped the
200 medley relay to victory. Ava Hendrickson (500 free) and Miia Filipovski
(100 backstroke) were victorious in individual events.
In a nonleague meet: UPPER DARBY 91, BONNERPRENDERGAST 71 >> Depth proved to be key for the Royals. Kiera Hunt (200 IM), Devon Conaway (50 free) and Cass Connelly (100 backstroke) each claimed victory in one event.
The Friars fell despite quadruple-winning performances by twin sisters Claire and Grace McBlain.
Boys Swimming
Connor Hunt, Duncan McConnell and Patrick Rankin helped Upper Darby cruised to a 120-46 victory over Bonner-Prendergast.
Rankin was first in the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke, Hunt bested the field in the 200 IM and 500 free, and McDonnell claimed victory in the 50 free and 100 free.
