Knights of Columbus plan breakfast to help local fire victims
The Knights of Columbus Peace Council #1195, Haverford Rd., Crum Lynne, will hold a breakfast fundraiser
9 a.m. to 12 noon Saturday, Feb. 22, to help local victims of recent fires in the area. Cost is $10 for adults and
$5 for children under 10. The breakfast is sponsored by The Knights of Columbus and Friends of the Ridley and Eddystone fire victims. All proceeds will go to the Toland and Waters Families. George Toland is an Honorable Life Member of Peace Council and JoAnne Waters is a neighbor who helps in many of the Knights’ charitable works.

Foster Grandparents needed
The County of Delaware Foster Grandparent Program is currently accepting inquiries from those interested in becoming a foster grandparent to serve in the community by mentoring and tutoring children in Head Start centers, childcare centers and elementary schools.
The Foster Grandparent Program was established for individuals 55 and older who have a desire to help children achieve their full potential and are available at least 15 hours per week. Benefits include a tax-free stipend of up to $400 a month, transportation assistance, paid vacation, sick, holidays and personal days. Haverford Township Adult School (HTAS) is accepting registrations for the Spring 2020 semester. Classes begin Monday, Feb. 24 featuring a diverse curriculum designed to appeal to the broad interests of the community.

St. Francis Over 50 Club meets, travels
St. Francis Over 50 Club in Springfield will meet in Leonard Hall Thursday, Feb. 13, with entertainment by Tom Tolnay. Tickets for pizza day on Feb. 27 will be on sale. For club membership information, call Cathy Randazzo at 610-328-0408. The club is non-denominational and all are welcome.

Woodlyn Baptist Church offers puppets and pancakes to children
Woodlyn Baptist Church,
1125 MacDade Blvd., Ridley Township, will host a free children’s pancakes and puppets event 9-11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 15. The WBC Puppeteers will present “Noah’s Ark.” Parents are welcome to accompany their children age 4 through fifth grade for pancakes, games, crafts, puppets and an interactive program. Parents are not required to stay. Breakfast will be served for those arriving between 9 and 9:30 a.m.

Brookhaven Town Watch holds spaghetti dinner
Brookhaven Town Watch will host a Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser 2-6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9, at the Brookhaven Municipal Center, 2 Cambridge Road. The cost is $10 for adults; $4 for children 12 and under. Dinner includes meal, salad, beverage and desert. Take-out will also be available.
Proceeds will be used to update communications equipment and to continue to support the Brookhaven Fire and Police Departments and youth sports groups.
Delco Business and Professional Women’s Club meets for dinner and networking
The Delaware County Business and Professional Women’s Club will meet Wednesday, Feb. 12 at Lamb Tavern, 865 West Springfield Rd., Springfield. The speaker will be Heidi Farinas of Bethany Christian Services who will speak on the needs of at risk children, families and refugees
living in the Delaware Valley. Bethany Christian Services has provided services to children and families for more than 40 years. All are invited to attend to learn about the work of this important group.

Media Rec offers residents $25 Flower Show tickets
The Media Recreation Board is selling discounted Flower Show tickets to borough residents. There is a limit of 5 tickets per resident. The tickets are $25 each. The number of tickets is limited and on a first come first serve basis.

Vest-A-Cop opens second round of grant program
Vest-A-Cop Foundation is announcing its second round of the grant program designed to aid Delaware County police departments in the purchase of safety equipment to protect officers while on duty. The VestA-Cop Departmental Safety Equipment Grant Program opened this month, with awards being announced to departments in late May or early June.
The Vest-A-Cop Departmental Safety Equipment Grant Program will be offered by Vest-A-Cop Foundation to Delaware County departments in addition to the ongoing purchase of bulletproof vests for individual officers serving the county and surrounding areas. Departments are now encouraged to apply for grants to aid in the purchase of a variety of safety equipment including, but not limited to: shields, helmets, radio equipment, body cameras, and more. Maximum grant size for the program is $1,000 per department per cycle.
Vest-A-Cop was formed in August of 2015 following the shooting of Ridley Park Officer Marc Hanly while on duty. Crediting his bulletproof vest with his survival of the ordeal, Hanly and Carole Nasella started Vest-A-Cop to provide resources to local first responders in order to procure life-saving equipment. To date, Vest-A-Cop has provided local first responders with 80 vests and 1,000 tourniquets and $14,000 in Safety Grants.
Vest-A-Cop Foundation is a Ridley Park-based 501(c) (3) organization that provides administrative and financial services to first responders across Delaware County. Ridley Township Library hosts events to mark 2020 Academy Awards
The Ridley Township Library will present a gala evening celebrating the Academy Awards, “The Oscars Past and Present,” 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, to which everyone is invited.
Hosted by historian and author Irv Slifkin, the presentation will review the Academy Awards with discussion and clips from such Oscar contenders as “Joker,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” “Ford v Ferrari,” “Parasite, “JoJo Rabbit,” “Little Women, ““The Irishman,” “1917, “Marriage Story” and others.He’ll also talk about previous Oscar years and more.
Also on Feb. 7, the Library will show movies in contention for 2020 Oscars. “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” will be screened at
10:15 a.m., “Harriet” will go on at 1p.m., and “Toy Story

Holmes Presbyterian youth group holds soup luncheon and bake sale
The Youth Group of Holmes Presbyterian Church, 375 Holmes Rd., will their annual Soup Luncheon/ Bake Sale Fundraiser 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8. Snow date is Feb. 15. This year, varieties will include Chili, Chicken Noodle, Clam Chowder, Italian Wedding, Potato, Tomato, Vegetable Beef (pre-order only), Broccoli Cheddar, Lasagna Soup and French Onion. A meal of soup. beverage and fresh rolls, costs $6. Soups sell quickly and quantities are limited, so it’s first come first served.

Scanlon holds talk back session after ‘Eleanor’
Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon will reflect on the remarkable legacy of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt during a Talk Back session following the 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9 matinee of “Eleanor, An American Love Story,” the history-based musical playing at the Media Theatre, 104 E. Penn State Extension provides ‘LIFT’ strength-training program
Penn State Extension will offer an in-person and groupbased strength-training program for inactive to moderately active adults aged 40 and older. Lifelong Improvements through Fitness Together (LIFT) will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., starting Monday, Feb. 17 at First United Methodist Church of Media, 350 W. State St.. Participation may result in improvements in functional fitness or the ability to perform activities of daily living with ease.
LIFT sessions are held twice a week for one hour over the course of eight weeks and include an active warmup, eight core strengthtraining exercises and a cooldown period. The program also encourages participants to increase their consumption of fruits and vegetables.
Strength training offers physical, mental and emotional benefits including increased muscle mass and strength; improved bone density; reduced risk for osteoporosis and related fractures; reduced risk of diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, depression and obesity; and improved self-confidence, sleep and vitality.
Cost of the program is
$60. Some insurance policies may reimburse participants with 80 percent or better attendance. Those attending should check with their insurance provider for more information.
