100 Years Ago – 1920:
An appeal is made to the striking railroad workers to return to their employment in this city, if for no other reason than that they are placing in jeopardy the well being of every man, woman and child in the community, while their own cause will be in no way aided. In the public interest the Times asks that the men heed. If the strike continues for one week the city will be faced by famine. Within seven days practically every industry here will suspend and thousands of men and women will be thrown out of employment.
75 Years Ago – 1945:
A blueprint for post-war Chester with good drinking water, a streamlined bus terminal in center city, wide, well-paved streets, elaborate parks and without railroad grade crossing or sub-standard housing was envisioned by leaders Tuesday night at Public Affair forum. Twenty-one of the city’s 85,000residents attended. The YMCA, itself tagged for post-war changes, was the scene of the meeting.
50 Years Ago – 1970:
An unidentified woman was found in her 1963 station wagon at 10:30 a.m. today in an apparent suicide, according to Chester Township police. The car was found in a vacant field behind the
Star Dust Inn, Conchester Road; From the AP, Cape Kennedy – America’s Apollo 13astronauts are ready to fly man’s riskiest moonlanding mission today after a rookie spaceman earned a seat with a remarkable and unprecedented rehearsal. If John L. Swigert, 38, hadn’t made it, the launching would have been postponed until May 9at a cost of at least $800,000.
25 Years Ago – 1995:
A $13.6million budget for special education has been approved by the Delaware County Intermediate Unit Board of Directors. IU Pupil Programs Director Harry Jamison said five districts announced intention of providing needed services for some number of special-education students: William Penn 52; Southeast Delco, 20; Interboro, 15; Ridley, 6; and Chichester, 3. The change in projected enrollments will result in the elimination of about 10 teaching positions and 18 teaching assistant positions.
10 Years Ago – 2010:
The wait is over. St. Joseph School in Collingdale will be closing at the end of this school year. According to the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, St. Joseph School only had 142of the required 200 students registered by the archdiocese’s March 30 deadline. Save St. Joseph School Committee Vice President Mary Ann Dooner said the Friday notification letters were sent home with the children’s name and room number on the outside of the envelope, instead of being addressed to the parents.
