100 Years Ago – 1920: Breaking of a field coil on one of the 30,000kilowat­t turbines at the new Waterside Station of the Delaware County Electric Co. yesterday has played havoc with some local industries. Several have been forced to shut down completely and others are operating on a greatly reduced schedule. Repairs are expected to be completed today. The Aberfoyle Manufactur­ing Co. was closed down all day yesterday and when the

2,000employe­es reported this morning, they were sent home until noon time.

75 Years Ago – 1945: The source of a terrific explosion that shook the eastern seaboard and illuminate­d the heavens over a 200mile area this morning remained shroud in mystery today, despite an intensive investigat­ion by authoritie­s from six states and the federal government. Explanatio­ns ranged from the failing of a meteor into the sea off New Jersey to a German rock bomb blast, but none of the theories had any support in actual evidence.

50 Years Ago – 1970: President Richard Nixon’s decision to send U.S. ground troops into Cambodia has touched off massive protests at colleges in Delaware County and throughout the nation. In this area, Bryn Mawr and Swarthmore college students have called campus strikes to devote full time to antiwar activities. Spokesmen emphasized the strikes were not against the colleges but against the war. At Swarthmore College, an estimated 700of 1,100 students agreed Sunday night to boycott classes.

25 Years Ago – 1995: CoreStates Financial Corp. has identified 24 branch offices it will close or merge in the region, including four in Delaware County. The Delco branches impacted are: Cambridge Square, Cambridge Square Shopping Center, 4809 Edgemont Ave., Brookhaven; Brookhaven, Brookhaven Shopping Center, 33003600 Edgemont Ave., Brookhaven; Lima, 1190 W. Baltimore Pike, Media and Village Green, 243 Concord Road, Aston.

10 Years Ago – 2010: From the police blotter: Unknown persons removed a mailbox along with its post and discarded the mailbox from a Thornbury residence between 6and 7 p.m. Friday. It was discarded at Grist Mill and Creek roads, state police said; Six eyeglass frames valued at a total of $1,145 were reported stolen Friday night from Eagle Opticians in the Riddle Memorial Hospital Outpatient Pavilion in Middletown.
