100 Years Ago – 1920: “I am the man who got the gold,” asserted James E. Romig yesterday after he had been grilled for more than three hours by army investigat­ors probing the escape of Grover Cleveland Bergdoll, Army convict and slacker, who was taken from prison to search for “buried hold.” Romig’s admission conflicts with previous stories told by Mrs. Emma C. Bergoll, the fugitive’s mother, and D. Clarence Gibboney, his chief counsel. Mrs. Bergdoll said Grover obtained the gold himself at the Treasury Department in Washington. Mr. Gibboney stated Bergdoll got the gold at a bank and that it took bank employees a whole working day to count the piles of shining yellow coins.

75 Years Ago – 1945: John J. McClure is conducting his own version of the Gallup Poll to determine how strong the sentiment is against his handpicked candidates.

For the first time in local political history, cards have been printed by the Republican High Command and distribute­d to ward heelers and job holders in an effort to bolster the organizati­on ticket.

50 Years Ago – 1970: Aldon Industries Inc., longtime local manufactur­er of carpeting and rugs, will move its manufactur­ing operations to Calhoun, Ga., and phase out its Lenni plant by Sept. 1. The company also said its $4 million distributi­on and administra­tive center has been completed in the Concord Industrial Park. Michael Bush of the company’s personnel department said today 175 salaried employees will remain at the new Concord facility, while 100 workers will try to be place with other county firms.

25 Years Ago – 1995: The Chester Upland School Board of Control cancelled a budget meeting scheduled for last night - the second cancellati­on this month. According to Superinten­dent Dr. Jo-Ann Manning, the meeting was cancelled because board members did not have all of the informatio­n needed to make a decision on the district’s preliminar­y budget.

10 Years Ago – 2010: Penn Wood High School senior Richard Lion was awarded a $250 prize by the American Legion at a recent Lansdowne council meeting. Earlier in the school year, the American Legion sponsored an essay contest about the U.S. Constituti­on, which was open to all Penn Wood seniors. Lion won first prize, while honorable mentions went to Sasha Scott and Nadya Austin.
