100 Years Ago – 1920:

Sixty friends of Mayor William T. Ramsey tendered that popular official a bon voyage dinner last night at the Manufactur­ers’ Club in Philadelph­ia. Tears came into the eyes of the chief executive of Chester as he accepted the gift of a handsome traveling bag from the hands of toastmaste­r T.W. Allison, accompanie­d with words teeming with praise and esteem. He will study the laws of Great Britain and Norway upon the subject of compulsory health insurance for working people, a mission of the utmost importance.

75 Years Ago – 1945:

Chester’s new YMCA is to be built on the Eyre Park acres bounded by Chester Creek and overlookin­g Deshong Park Drive, it was announced today by John G. Pew, president of the YMCA Board of Trustees. Pew has given his personal assurance that funds will be forthcomin­g to build both a foot bridge connecting the center with Sproul Street and a dam in the creek to maintain the water at a high level so that the creek may be used for swimming, boating and ice skating.

50 Years Ago – 1970:

Two Chester area policemen were arrested on charges stemming from October burglaries of a state liquor store in Chester and a beverage distributo­rship in Chester Township. And a source close to the case said at least nine other policemen are being investigat­ed for possible connection with a series of other crimes, including stickups. The arrests were the first results of a fourmonth investigat­ion by the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office and the Chester Police Department.

25 Years Ago – 1995:

All bicycle cops should be wearing protective helmets while on bike patrol, Darby Borough Councilman Wilbur A. Smith warned. “This borough is not going to be responsibl­e if they trip over something and fall off their bicycles,” Smith told Police

Chief Robert Smythe. At council’s committee meeting two weeks ago, one council member wondered what kind of role model to children officers without helmets are.

10 Years Ago – 2010:

Sixty pistols and long guns taken out of the hands of criminals in Upper Darby will be melted down for scrap and used to make bridge beams. “They were involved in robberies and one or two suicides, but the majority come out of drug raids and arrests,” said Police Superinten­dent Michael Chitwood.
