Upper Darby thanked for fast action against racism
This is an open letter to Dr. Daniel P. McGarry, Upper Darby Superintendent of Schools.
Dear Dr. McGarry:
On behalf of the Delaware County Black Caucus (DCBC), we would like to thank you for your swift action and decision to recommend the firing of an employee who posted a racist comment on Facebook. It is quite refreshing to have individuals in leadership positions who have empathy and understanding toward the struggles that black Americans have for simply being black in America. More importantly, to have allies who are willing to stand up to racism, discrimination, and injustice is vital to the success of our children, as well as the success of having a fair and impartial education system.
Upon reading the June 5, 2020 article in the Daily Times, we were made aware of the prejudiced social media posting by a school district employee. Our organization was outraged to read about the educator’s remark. The statement was the educator’s response to a post about protests and civil disruptions that occurred in Dallas as a result of the death of George Floyd and many other black people at the hands of police.
The original post was taken off Facebook, but several people took a screenshot of the post and placed it on their timelines so the community and the UDSD would know about it. In these days of racial tension across our country, adults who work with children should not take a stance of justifiably murdering anyone for any reason. Therefore, we are pleased that you acted justly and swiftly.
Again, we thank you for your courage in doing the right thing and implementing professional accountability for your employee. Having you at the helm of education administration for the families of Upper Darby Township is refreshing. If you ever need our input or assistance as you continue to lead the UDSD, please know we are ready and available to support your efforts to end racism, and provide equity and fairness for all children in the Upper Darby community.
