Source: Jets star safety Adams wants out, requests a trade

-

NEW YORK » A person with direct knowledge of the situation says All-Pro safety Jamal Adams has requested a trade from the New York Jets amid a contract dispute.

Adams, 24, has been seeking a contract extension, and the Jets have said they want the safety to remain a member of the team his entire career. But, the conflict apparently is about the timing: Adams wants the extension now, while the team prefers to wait until next year, at the earliest.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Thursday.

The Jets are in no rush to address Adams’ contract because they hold rights to the safety through next season and could also potentially use the franchise tag on him in 2022. But, it appears Adams is now trying to force the team’s hand to get the new deal he covets.

Through social media, Adams has made his frustration at the team’s slow pace in addressing his situation well known. On Thursday, he responded to a comment on Instagram and indicated he might be looking to play elsewhere. “Maybe it’s time to move on!” Adams said in the post.

ESPN reported Adams has seven teams he’d welcome being traded to: Baltimore, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, the Eagles, San Francisco and Seattle.

Adams was drafted by the Jets with the sixth overall pick out of LSU in 2017.

Frequently suspended wide receiver Josh Gordon has applied to the NFL for reinstatement, a person with knowledge of the move told The Associated Press. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.

Gordon, 29, has been suspended eight times overall by either his team or the NFL, including six times since 2013, mostly for violating the league’s policies on banned substances. He played for New England and then briefly for Seattle last season.

An All-Pro in 2013 for Cleveland despite missing the first two games while suspended, he led the league with 1,646 yards receiving,

but his career has spiraled since.

Rams, Chargers on ‘Hard Knocks’

LOS ANGELES » It will be lights, cameras, Los Angeles again for “Hard Knocks” but for the first time the show will feature two franchises.

HBO and NFL Films announced that this year’s show will include the Rams and Chargers, which are both moving into SoFI Stadium in Inglewood, Calif. and will be attempting to bounce back from disappointing seasons. The five-week series will premiere Aug. 11.

Chronicling two teams won’t be the only difference. With the coronavirus pandemic, players, coaches and production crews will be going through new protocols to prevent or mitigate any possible infections.
