100 Years Ago – 1920: Miss Sara J. Burnley of Lenni, stenographer in the office of Register of Wills Franklin P. Haller, had a birthday June 17and gave an impromptu party in the Commissioner’s office at noon, and surprised her friends with ice cream and cake. 75 Years Ago – 1945: Judge E. Wallace Chadwick lost his fight for a full 10-year term on the Orphans’ Court bench by a scant 1,620 votes to Lt. Col. E. LeRoy van Roden, McClure-supported candidate. Almost 62,000 votes were cast in the tense primary which saw the Republican organization in one of the strongest fights it has ever waged, gain its scant victory in John J. McClure’s own bailiwick – the City of Chester. Sweeping district after district in the county, Chadwick held a substantial lead which was submerged when Chester’s famous “Zero Wards” announced their returns. 50 Years Ago – 1970:

The secretary of the Chester Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 19 was arrested Friday night on burglary charges. At the same time, two other policemen arrested earlier this week were rearrested on new burglary charges. 25 Years Ago – 1995: In a community which prides itself on country atmosphere and open vistas, it would be unusual for citizens to side with a developer who wants to build a high-density condominium complex. Yet, such a proposal might be welcome when it means the razing of Pulsations Night Club, a longtime thorn in the side of Concord Township. Tonight’s planning commission meeting is certain to generate debate when representatives of Concordville Life Care Center present plans for a 312unit retirement community on the Pulsations site.

10 Years Ago – 2010: Between the broccoli and the green beans, George Gardiner is able to elicit smiles. Five days a week during the school year, the 47-year-old Yeadon resident is cocoordinator of the hot lunch program at Blessed Virgin Mary School in Darby. As the only male member of the school staff who daily deals directly with all 140 students, Gardiner serves as an important role model, said Sister Virginia Paschall, BVM School principal.
