100 Years Ago – 1920: Delaware County industries during the year 1919 produced manufactur­es having a total value of

$356,920,000, according to figures just compiled by the state Bureau of Statistics and Informatio­n. Of the total valuation, $112,468,700 were produced in the city of Chester, and $49,494,000 worth of manufactur­es were turned out at Marcus Hook, showing the value of manufactur­ed products in other parts of the county to be $194,956,700.

75 Years Ago – 1945: The largest concert crowd of the season was chased by the rain at Deshong Park last night midway through a program by the Westinghou­se Steam Division Band. Five numbers had been completed when the storm interfered and sent bandsmen and the audience running for shelter.

50 Years Ago – 1970: It reminded you of a children’s story – “The Little Red Hat.” It was something you will probably never see again. Saturday after an old pickup truck was traveling south on Interstate Highway 95. Two young men were sitting in the back on some boxes. One of the fellows was wearing a bright red hat. Just as they passed the Kerlin Street on-ramp a gust of wind blew the hat from his head. A white car was easing on to the highway from the ramp and the hat came spiraling by. The passenger in the car reached out of the window and grabbed the hat in his hand. The fellows on the truck gave a cheer and the driver pulled off on the shoulder of the road.

25 Years Ago – 1995: Delaware County’s 15 public school districts are slated for a big $4.1 million increase in state subsidies under legislatio­n pending in the House, some benefiting from Gov. Tom Ridge’s budget putting greater emphasis on growing enrollment­s than those of Gov. Robert Casey. Ridley is slated for an 8.8 percent increase of

$569,000, while Upper Darby is due a 5.2 increase of $582,000.

10 Years Ago – 2010:

The streets of Chester mostly have been silent for the last two nights, the first two under a state of emergency declared by Mayor Wendell N. Butler Jr. Saturday following violence that surged as spring rolled into summer. It is only two nights, but when a city suffers through four homicides in an eight-day span, two quiet nights is a start. The Republican mayor deemed the early stages of the lockdown effective Tuesday.
