‘Trust the people?’ Why have laws?

- Mike Mayer, Wallingford

To the Times:

I was simply amazed to hear Florida governor, Ron DeSantis, say, “We’re gonna continue to put out the messaging, we’re gonna continue to put out the guidance, and we’re gonna trust people to make good decisions.” What a terrific position to take regarding a deadly pandemic that is running like wildfire throughout your state. What outstanding leadership!

I think you should turn your last statement, “we’re gonna trust people to make good decisions” into your official state government policy.

The first thing to do is get rid of those stupid seat belt laws. We all know that seat belts save lives and reduce injuries so we’re gonna trust people to make good decisions and wear them.

Why enforce speed limit laws on Florida highways? We all know what speeds are safe so we’re gonna trust people to make good decisions and drive safely.

DUI laws? Why? People know when they’ve had too much to drink and we’re gonna trust people to make good decisions and not drive when they are impaired.

Stop signs and traffic lights? They’re okay as suggestions but we’re gonna trust people to make good

decisions and proceed into intersections when it is safe to do so.

Vaccinations for children required by law? Come on, we have to force people to protect their kids from deadly diseases? We’re gonna trust people to make good decisions and get their kids vaccinated.

Sales taxes collected, by law, at the register for each sale. Is that really necessary? We all know it takes money, lots of money, to run a state so we’re gonna trust people to make good decisions and pay their fare share. S

ame goes for state income tax. Just send the state a check every year for your fair share! We know you all will do the right thing.

Stop and think about how many laws we have that are written to force people to do the “right thing”. Most of them. Why were they written? Because left to their own devices many people will justify and rationalize almost any type of behavior regardless of the concerns of society at large.

rules to make sure anarchy doesn’t govern society. The current behavior of people in states where restrictions have been lifted proves the point. Left to their own devices many in our society will do whatever they feel like regardless of it’s impact on themselves, their families or their neighbors.
