100 Years Ago – 1920:
Attacked in bed at an early hour this morning, Ignatz Scarboski, 19Graham St., Chester, was removed to the Chester Hospital in an unconscious condition after being beaten with a blackjack. Screams of the victim attracted the attention of other inmates in the house and a short time later John Kuserick, 601 North St., who is charged with going to Scarboski, bent on murder, was seen throwing a blackjack, revolver and cartridges out of the window.
75 Years Ago – 1945:
The spirit of John Morton took a new lease on life the morning of July 4 on the occasion of the annual Morton commemoration services directed by Isaac A. Hiorth. Judge Henry J. Sweney, after pointing to the evidence that Morton’s death was hastened by criticism of his signing the Declaration of Independence, asserted that today as in the 19th century citizens faces the choice of freedom or serfdom and that it takes courage and sacrifice to stand against the everlasting threat of regimentation.
50 Years Ago – 1970: Two Nether Providence pilots started winging their way home yesterday from Monterey, Calif. They’re flying in the 24th annual Powder Puff Derby, the women’s July 4 transcontinental classic. Marsha Ivins, 19, is pilot and Adelle M. Parsons, is co-pilot. Ivins is the daughter of a physician and Parsons is the wife of one.
25 Years Ago – 1995:
Since its May 1984 founding on Bristol Pike in the Andalusia section of Bensalem, Rita’s Water Ice has been one of the fastest-growing franchises in the nation, according to Entrepreneur magazine. In April of this year, John and Theresa Kopena with John and Rosalie Murphy (Theresa’s parents) opened their third Rita’s since last March when they began their journey into the world of fresh-fruit water ice sales. The four partners decided to buy in after they noticed the brisk sales at a Rita’s store in Aston.
10 Years Ago – 2010:
People may disagree about the merits of building a soccer stadium on the Chester riverfront but few who attended the Philadelphia Union’s first game at PPL Park or a Commodore Barry Bridge backdrop on ESPN would call it anything short of surreal. Two weeks from today, legalized table games will arrive at Harrah’s Chester. State Senate Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi said the development that is luring people back to the Chester waterfront was almost unthinkable 20 years ago.
