100 Years Ago – 1920:
Three men were burned when an acetylene tank exploded early morning
July 3at the Sun Ship Co. plant. The injured, who were taken to the Chester Hospital, were all of Philadelphia. Through badly scorched, none of the trio are in a serious condition, according to the hospital attaches. The men were standing by the tank, which furnished gas for illumination, and without warning the tank let go with a terrific roar. While the flame spread over a wide area, no property damage was done.
75 Years Ago – 1945:
Two community celebrations in Chester, the John Morton commemorative services at the Old City Hall, and the West End Independence Day ceremonies, brought out hundreds of spectators here while elsewhere over the county water contests, baseball games, children’s contests and aces and community square dancing marked the passing of another year of this country’s history.
50 Years Ago – 1970:
Philadelphia will host America’s 200th birthday celebration in 1976 with an international exposition, U.S. Sen. Hugh Scott, R-Pa., says. Washington, Boston and Miami, which were in competition with Philadelphia, all will help celebrate with national rallies. Delaware County’s plans for the bicentennial will be organized now that a decision has been made regarding Philadelphia.
25 Years Ago – 1995:
Inspectors have issued deadlines to the Chester police department and city officials for cleaning and beginning repairs on the dilapidated police station. Fire Battalion Chief Joseph J. Cliffe said Monday the police department has five days to get all housekeeping violations cleaned up and the city until July
18 to begin work on all other violations. Failure to comply will result in the building being shut down, Cliffe said.
10 Years Ago – 2010:
Longtime Aston Township resident Ron Jones was named Outstanding Citizen of the Year at last month’s commissioners meeting. The father of eight and grandfather of six, Jones is a member of the township planning commission, Veterans Memorial Garden Foundation Committee, and is a firefighter with the Aston-Beechwood Fire Co., where he has served several terms as president, and is a member of the Fire Police. A Vietnam veteran, Jones was awarded the Purple Heart and Army Commendation of Valor Medal and was activated in operation Desert Storm.
