MARPLE » Delco Steaks, Delaware County’s newest cheesesteak restaurant, featuring a 2-foot, one-anda-half-pound cheesesteak known as “The Delco,” will hold a grand opening celebration on Saturday, July 11. The festivities at Delco Steaks, 2567 West Chester Pike, Broomall, will feature a cheesesteak eating contest at 4 p.m., live music from 6 to 8 p.m., and free Delco Lager, courtesy of 2SP Brewing Company, all day to patrons over 21 years of age.

Delco Steaks features cheesesteaks, hamburgers, hot dogs, french fries, chicken fingers, milkshakes, and a premium menu of butcher shop packaged Pennsylvania farmraised black Angus meat.

Nick Reynolds and John McKenzie, two lifelong friends from Delaware County, who last year revived the Splash Swim Club in Broomall, are the proprietors, taking over what was once Jean’s Luncheonette, an iconic breakfast place in Delco for nearly 30 years. Delco Steaks will offer Jean’s Sweet Tea, a staple of her restaurant. Steve Reynolds, Nick’s brother and most recently director of fund raising for Alex’s Lemonade, will operate the sandwich shop.

“It’s always been a lifelong dream of mine to open up a cheesesteak shop,” said Nick Reynolds. “Growing up and going to places like Pat’s, Geno’s, and Jim’s steaks, I always loved their vibe - the lights, the people, the action. We want to create that same vibe here in Delco and light up West Chester Pike by providing the best tasting food using our meats and dairy from local Pennsylvania farms. We only use the best ingredients and we hope our customers can really taste the difference.”

As part of the grand opening festivities, Delco Steaks is seeking ten of Delaware County’s best eaters to see who can devour “The Delco,” a 2-foot cheesesteak featuring oneand-a-half pounds of meat, on Saturday, July 11, at 4 p.m. Registration is available on Delco Steaks’ Facebook page (@Delco steaks) where the contestants will be revealed on Thursday at 4 p.m.

Delco Steaks will separate the eaters 6 feet apart at individual tables for the contest. The winner receives a $250 Delco Steaks gift card, a Delco Steaks championship belt, and a picture on the restaurant’s Wall of Fame.

Take-out and delivery are available. Delco Steaks is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.; Friday from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m.; Saturday from 9 a.m. until 10 p.m.; and Sunday from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. For more information, visit Delcosteaks.com.

Public invited to groundbreaking ceremony for new Aston Township Firehouse

The Aston Township Board of Commissioners and Aston Township Fire Department will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Aston Township Firehouse 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 16, at the current firehouse, 2900 Dutton Mill Rd., Aston.

The Green Ridge Fire Department and the Aston Beechwood Fire Department merged January 1, 2015 becoming Aston Township Fire Department, being placed in service by Chief Michael Evans. After much discussion and public input, it was decided that the former home of the Green Ridge Fire Department would be the permanent home of the Aston Township Fire Departments new and improved firehouse.

The Firehouse Building Committee along with township representatives have worked diligently for the past five years to design a state of the art facility that will take the members and residents of Aston into the future. The new station has been designed by Bonnett Associates, Inc. of Eddystone. The design allows first responders to get to their apparatus and their response route, as quickly and efficiently as possible.

The public is invited to come out to mark this special groundbreaking occasion. Light refreshments will be served at the conclusion of the ceremony.
