100 Years Ago – 1920:
The McClure Faction has given up the fight against Albert Dutton MacDade for the nomination for state Senator and Henry F. Miller for the nomination of the Legislature. This statement was made by county Chairman W. Frank Mathues this morning:
“As county chairman, I am doing all I can to promote harmony in the Republican ranks of Delaware County. This county is not big enough to support two factions, and as this is the presidential year, we should present a solid front. Both sides have made mistakes, and we hope both sides will forget the mistakes of the other. I tis with this thought of harmony that I can make public the fact that the election contests instituted by R.J. Baldwin, candidate for state Senator, and Harry E. Heyburn, candidate for the Legislature, will be withdrawn.”
75 Years Ago – 1945:
So that fewer American soldiers will have to sleep on the floors and sitting up in the prickly plush seats of hot, sooty railroad coaches, as they travel cross-country on the road to Tokyo, the Pullman Company has issued an urgent call for 343 new workers at its Wilmington car repair shops, located on the river side of the new highway between Chester and Wilmington.
50 Years Ago – 1970:
A general-alarm fire of unknown origin wrecked the Welsh Restaurant, 625 Welsh St., before dawn today and caused smoke damage to three neighboring stores. One fireman – Cecil Hudgins, 53, of Moyamensing Hook and Ladder Co. – was injured, though not seriously, battling the blaze, which erupted shortly after 4 a.m. in the basement of the three-story restaurant building, formerly occupied by Sleepers College.
25 Years Ago – 1995:
Chester City Council will consider releasing approximately $120,000 in Urban Development Action Grant monies to allow the Community Action Agency to begin construction of its Madison Street Project. The three-phase project includes the rehabilitation of four properties and the construction of 15 new housing units in the Madison Street and Morton Avenue area from 7th to
12th streets.
10 Years Ago – 2010: Concord supervisors granted conditional use and preliminary land development for a Residence Inn by Marriott on Route 202.
