100 Years Ago – 1920: The deal has been consummate­d whereby Division No. 1, Ancient Order of Hibernians, has become the owner of the property at 1225 Edgmont Ave., Chester. For a period of 34 years, the division had its headquarte­rs in the Cochrane Building at 533 Market St., and due to extensive repairs to that structure being made, the organizati­on was to compelled to seek other quarters.

75 Years Ago – 1945: Anna M. Brice, Chester’s first policewoma­n, has resigned from the force. Mayor Ralph F. Swarts, who heads the police department as director of the Department of Public Affairs, disclosed today that the resignatio­n had been made in a letter and that he had accepted it, effective as of Aug. 12. He said that Brice did not go into detailed reasons in the letter and had merely asked to be relieved of her duties at the completion of her vacation.

50 Years Ago – 1970: “It was no hardship, as I look back on life,” said William Craemer of Swarthmore, as he spoke of his retirement after 45 years as treasurer of the United Community Fund of Chester and Vicinity. Craemer, retired treasurer of Sun Shipbuildi­ng & Dry Dock Co., Chester, was one of the UCF founders in 1924 and became its treasurer in 1929. Craemer recalled his early days of community welfare activities, including John G. Pew, the late Richard Wetherill, Col. J.A.G. Campbell, William Provost and Hugh H. Ward.

25 Years Ago – 1995: Officials from a North Carolina brick manufactur­er told Chester City Council Wednesday they want to operate a soil recycling facility on a 3.4-acre site at the former Pennsylvan­ia Shipbuildi­ng Co. Zulene Mayfield, chair of the Chester Residents Concerned for Quality Living, was skeptical. “They must apply for a permit, so it’s a waste disposal facility, I don’t care how many names you give it.”

10 Years Ago – 2010: Chester

City Council will meet this morning for the first time since it extended the state of emergency on June 23 and the last before its July 23 expiration. “Myself, I’m hoping to lift it and I’m hoping everybody else is ready to lift it and continue the policing, putting more people on the street,” said Councilman John Linder, a Democrat. Republican Councilwom­an Marrea WalkerSmit­h said she would stand behind the direction of Mayor Wendell N. Butler Jr., a Republican.
