100 Years Ago – 1920: According to a rumor current this morning, ground will be broken within a short time for the erection of a warehouse at Third Street and Central Avenue in Chester. The new operation will costs thousands of dollars and will be backed, it is understood, but syndicate money under the direction of a former Chesterite who is now making his home in Atlantic City. The plot of ground upon which the proposed warehouse, is to be built is one of the most valuable sites in the West Side.

75 Years Ago – 1945: The expenses of the McClure organizati­on in the June Primary election were $46,573, and not $65,159 a complete check-up revealed. The original figures listed the money collected, but on Thursday an accounting by Charles H. Russell, of the Times Media staff who wrote the first story, and Clarence L. Conner, president of the Board of County Commission­ers, showed that $18,694 still remains from the collected. The McClure committee headed by James L. Shropshire collected $19,501.50 in Chester, but only $7,226 was spent leaving a balance of $12,275.

50 Years Ago – 1970: The Springfiel­d High School Band won two first-prize awards Saturday in the World Band Festival in Kerkrade, Holland, and drew a standing ovation from the judges after its concert performanc­e. Festival officials told the students this was the first time in the history of the festival that any band has won a first in two different categories, according to Warren Ventriglio, 705 Evans Road. The youth, a band member, telephoned his parents with the news.

25 Years Ago – 1995: Garnet Valley School District officials have provided the state with their first cost estimate for constructi­on of a new elementary school. The form submitted to the state Department of Education indicates a cost of $8.8 million, including architectu­ral and other profession­al fees, permits, and site preparatio­n.

10 Years Ago – 2010: Divine Providence Workshop, a prevocatio­nal program serving adults with developmen­tal disabiliti­es administer­ed by Catholic Social Services and located on the campus of Cardinal Krol Center and Don Guanella Village, will dedicate a new lounge and memorial garden this Friday. Funding for the new lounge and the Memorial Garden have been made possible by generous contributi­ons from the family and friends of Maura Lowry.
