100 Years Ago – 1920:

Charles Puls, 7, of 20th Street and Edgmont Avenue, Chester, narrowly escaped drowning in the waters of the old quarry on Fourth Street, west of Esrey Street, yesterday afternoon. He was rescued by William Knot, a companion. The boys, with others, went to the place and it was when attempting to get in an old falt-bottom boat that young Puls lost his balance and plunged into the water.

75 Years Ago – 1945:

Delaware County’s weather, the summer’s headline stealer, has turned out to be the maverick of the Philadelph­ia Weather Bureau, and Chief Weatherman

Henry P. Adams, a Delaware Countian himself, is going to do something about it. This will mark the first time in the history of Chester that the U.S. Weather Bureau has recognized that rain that falls on the Quaker City does not always dampen the streets of Chester.

And vice versa.

50 Years Ago – 1970:

About 750mourner­s, including Lt. Gov. Raymond J. Broderick, paid tribute Sunday night to Delaware County Commission­er Frank A. Snear during in a 3 1⁄2 –hour viewing at the William Rigby Funeral Home in Media. Although Snear’s family asked that flowers be omitted in favor of donations to the Delaware County branch of the SPCA in Upper Providence, at least 100 floral arrangemen­ts surrounded the casket.

25 Years Ago – 1995:

Residents from Tinicum, Folcroft, Newtown Square and Chester have launched independen­t candidacie­s in the upcoming contests for seats. In Tinicum, two members council candidates from the New Republican Party, Charles C. Campbell, a union painter, and Norbert J. Poloncarz, who is retired, will face George Raymond in the

1st Ward race and Ralph Slatten in the 3rd Ward respective­ly. In Chester, City Councilman William

Rocky Brown filed to run for mayor. Brown will face Democrat Josephine Hood and retired Chester High School Principal Aaron Wilson, a Republican.

10 Years Ago – 2010:

Parkside Borough Council recently unanimousl­y approved Victoria Howell of East Chelton Road to serve as Parkside’s next junior councilper­son. The daughter of Councilman William Howell was the lone applicant for the vacant position. The borough’s first junior councilper­son was Tamarind Howell, Victoria’s older sister, who is now a college student.
