Other Times
100 Years Ago – 1920:
Chester is to have a public swimming pool. It will be located in the West End. At a spirited meeting held in their headquarters last night, members of the Felton Fire Co. appointed a committee to collect data concerning the probable cost of building a twostory brick and cement addition to the engine house, the first floor of the proposed structure to be fitted as a swimming pool.
75 Years Ago – 1945:
Cigarettes, on the way back, just passed sugar on the way out! And the shortage of sugar promises to become far more acute than the smoke drought at its peak. Candy, cakes, pastries, soft drinks and ice cream top the casualty list. At Dalton’s bakery, the oldest in Chester, it was learned that Danish pastry, crullers and coffee buns have disappeared altogether, while cinnamon buns are being baked in very limited numbers, as are cupcakes. For some time the bakery has been delivering only every other day.
50 Years Ago – 1970: A New Jersey wholesaler of fireworks apparatus was in direct violation of federal laws by mailing explosive powder to a Chester youth two years ago, a postal inspector said Wednesday. This week, the 16-yearold told Chester juvenile authorities that the powder was the substance that exploded July 6 in a street adjacent to Memorial Park. Six children were burned in the explosion. Two of the children have since died.
25 Years Ago – 1995: The Gen. Smedley D. Butler Detachment of the Marine Corps League was the big winner at last month’s department convention in Lancaster, garnering first place honors for Americanism, Veteran Association Volunteer Services, and its newsletter edited by John Moyse.
10 Years Ago – 2010:
Facebook postings led police to raid a township beer distributor that allegedly sold booze to 18 customers under the legal drinking age, Upper Darby officials said. Police took the two owners and 18 individuals, ages 15 to 20, into custody. Five cars and 10 packaged cases of beer, two 12-packs and numerous loose cans of beer and malt liquor were confiscated by authorities. After receiving a tip, Capt. Anthony Paparo reviewed a Facebook page depicting teenagers drinking beer at a party. Paparo was able to check the ages of the kids on Facebook and the beer distributor surveillance was set up by police.
