End of summer blues hitting hard this Labor Day

Today is Labor Day, which marks the unofficial end of summer, and holy bananas am I not ready for that.

Normally, I’m - actually, normally on Labor Day I write a smartass column about the nature of the holiday, how it honors us hourly workers and union members, while The Man continues to seek ways to punish hourly workers and ditch unions, and how ridiculous it is that it’s even a holiday, and how it’s about as silly as Caddie Day at the pool in “Caddyshack,” but I’ve covered that ground before, and so that’s that, but yes, normally - normally, I’m never ready for summer to end. I love summer. Gimme sun and heat and beach and all that, all day long.

But this end of summer? It’s all bitter, zero sweet. Why? Well, because of the coronavirus, that’s why. Summer brought us a reprieve. It was almost - almost like a regular summer here in New Jersey. I went to the beach, I sat by the pool, I was outside probably 16 hours a day. And as we’ve learned, being outside is one of the best defenses against the coronavirus.

But now, with summer coming to an end, the weather is going to get cooler (then actual, honest-togoodness cold, and I can’t even think about that right now) and before you know it we’re going to be cooped up inside and the coronavirus numbers are almost certainly going to rise and … well, to quote The Counting Crows, it’s going to be a long December. It’s almost all bad, zero good, when it comes to Autumn 2020. Observe …

I don’t want to be inside sharing space with you.

At least it looks like the NFL season is going to be played.

There is little doubt in my mind we’re going to experience another round of lockdowns. They’ll be softer than the first time around, but I would be shocked if Murphy doesn’t do something if/when the numbers start to rise.

At least it looks like the NFL season is going to be played.

Not really coronavirus-related, more adjacent, but the presidential election is going to be unhealthy for our national psyche. There is zero chance the winner will be announced on election night, there is 100% chance Trump is going to claim victory on election night, and there is an actual, honest-to-goodness chance the country will teter on

the brink of a constitutional crisis when it comes to the transfer of power of the presidency. Good times.

Every sniffle my kids have will result in an immediate run to get tested for coronavirus which will trigger my anxiety while I wait for the results which will result in me having a sip of bourbon to calm my nerves which will lead to a second sip and so on and so forth and until I end up passed out on the couch while “Cobra Kai” streams on and on in the background.

At least it looks like the NFL season is going to be played.

Are there even going to

be new TV shows to watch in the fall? I feel like because of the coronavirus, our entertainment options are going to be curtailed.

The possibility of the NFL season being cut short due to coronavirus and if that happens you may need to do a wellness check on me.

At least it looks like the NFL season is going to be played, I mean, my god, if it doesn’t, then I don’t even know …

The fact I’ve managed to inject “Long December” into your brain and now it’s stuck there for months on end.

NFL, please God, I don’t ask for much.

I don’t think we’re going to have mall Santas. The world is clearly ending.

I’m literally drafting my main fantasy team today, and I already have way too many DFS lineups for Sunday, and the NFL better keep playing even if they have to trot out honest-to-goodness zombies.

Potential for honest-togoodness zombies, who knows how this corona thing is going to play out.
