Man acquitted of killing wife who vanished 81⁄2 years ago

CARLISLE, PA. » A central Pennsylvania man was acquitted of all charges that he killed and burned the body of his wife, who disappeared 8 ½ years ago.

Jurors in Cumberland County deliberated for about two hours Friday afternoon before acquitting 66-year-old Hap Seiders of first- and third-degree murder, evidence-tampering and abuse of a corpse. Judge Jessica Brewbaker then ordered the Silver Spring Township resident freed from county prison immediately.

“Justice eventually does prevail,” defense attorney George Matangos said following the verdict, which he said left his client speechless.

“He simply broke down. He could not believe that people finally understood everything he’s gone through,” Matangos said. “It’s been more than a year and six months since he was arrested on this charge and he’s had it hanging over him for 8 years.”

Seiders was charged seven years after prosecutors alleged he killed his 53-year-old wife, Rabihan, and incinerated her body in the fireplace of their Cumberland County home.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Courtney Hair LaRue said the couple’s “volatile” relationship was defined by “power and control.”

After he was charged with domestic violence in 2011, the prosecutor said, she got into a home safe, took valuable coins and hid them in a safe deposit box to try to regain some control over her life. Hap Seiders, a coin dealer, then “lured” his wife back into the relationship in hopes of finding the coins, LaRue alleged.

The woman then disappeared, last seen at a drug store near their home in March 2012. Prosecutors alleged she was killed and her body burned “to bones and ashes.” LaRue cited the home’s closed blinds for days, black smoke from the chimney and bone fragments found in the fireplace.

First Assistant District Attorney Michelle Sibert said she was shocked and disappointed by the verdict.

“We know who did it. We know it was Hap Seiders who murdered Rabihan. We would have done nothing different in this case or in this investigation,” Sibert said.
