100 Years Ago – 1920:
Now that the Pennsylvania Railroad Co. has removed the superstructure of the old Pennell Street bridge over its tracks, in compliance with the order of City Council, what is Chester to do with the 20 or 25 tons of junk at present on one of the company’s cars on a siding in the Thurlow yards? That was the question submitted to the members of City Council by Mr. Thorn, representing the rail company. A provision compels the city to advertise for competitive bids for the disposal, but if followed the city will be called upon to pay demurrage as the company has need for its car, and by the time bids are advertised for received and the sale confirmed, the value of the junk will in all probability be represented by demurrage charges.
75 Years Ago – 1945:
With a parade followed by a ceremony at the firehouse, the members of the Green Ridge Fire Co. in Aston dedicated their new home and housed their apparatus yesterday afternoon. The parade formed on Concord Road at Village Green and proceeded to Chester Plaza and through Green Ridge to the firehouse. Among the speakers was Judge Albert Dutton MacDade, who likened the occasion to the old town meetings of New England and gave thanks to God for His guidance in bringing the war to a successful conclusion.
50 Years Ago – 1970:
The 150-member Chester High School Band will be out in force Friday for a tag day and Saturday for a downtown drive to try to get funds to reach its $6,000 goal so it can attend the Pennsylvania School Board Association annual convention Oct. 16 in Pittsburgh.
25 Years Ago – 1995:
At least one person was injured inside Pulsations Nightclub when a riot sparked by a power outage - broke out about midnight Friday, requiring dozens of police officers to quell, police said. A state trooper said the unidentified victim was hurt after being hit by a chair. A telephone recording at the nightclub said that all-ages dance parties are held there on Fridays.
10 Years Ago – 2010:
Chester City Council approved the hiring of five patrol officers Wednesday, a move that drew praise from Mayor Wendell N. Butler
Jr. as he introduced the officers at the conclusion of the council meeting. The five officers are El’lan Morgan of Bear, Del., German Sabillon of Chester, Hector Villanueva of Glenolden, James Fiore of Folcroft and Willie McKinzie Jr. of Newark, Del.
