MORTON » The Delaware County Intermediate Unit will offer a free workshop, “Supporting Students with Special Needs in a Virtual Environment,” to help parents better navigate the often-challenging roadmap of educating their children with disabilities or learning challenges who may need extra help, 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, via Zoom.

The content of this workshop is geared toward parents. There will be no Act 48 or continuing education credit offered if a professional chooses to attend this workshop.

With many schools moving to a virtual learning environment, many students who need specially designed instruction and accommodation in the regular education classroom are the ones who struggle the most. Many students with learning support needs and executive functioning deficits struggle to stay engaged in the classroom, stay organized, and make academic progress. This workshop will look at tips and tools that can help parents to support students with learning support needs to promote success in their general education classes while learning remotely.

The workshop will be facilitated by Rebecca Kelly, Professional Development Specialist. The Zoom link will be sent to registered parents via email the morning of the event.

There is no cost to attend, but registration is necessary. To register for this session: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/120419837977.

CASA Youth Advocates Inc. welcomes two new board members

CASA Youth Advocates Inc., announced the addition of two new board members this week, as it continues its service to children in Delaware and Chester counties. Joining CASA’s board of directors are Sarah Relich of Philadelphia and Loretta Brehony of Delaware County.

Relich serves with Vanguard’s Investment Stewardship Team where she engages with directors of public companies to better understand their governance practices. Prior to her role with Vanguard, she served with Teach for America in Baltimore where she taught a population of children experiencing poverty and lack of resources – some of the same challenges facing many of the youth CASA serves. As she joined the board in March as the pandemic hit, she found her role to be critical with the additional challenges COVID presented abused and neglected children in Delaware and Chester counties.

As a retired Certified Public Accountant, Brehony became involved with CASA when a friend shared about his experience working with the San Diego chapter. She was immediately struck by its mission and knew in her retirement that she wanted to give back. In her role as a board member, Brehony hopes to better spread the word about the organization and how CASA reaches kids at the most critical level.

CASA Youth Advocates works to ensure that each child in Delaware and Chester counties’ child welfare systems lives well, achieves academic excellence, and experiences the joys of childhood by providing them with trained volunteer advocates who speak for their best interests with support and guidance from CASA’s professional staff of social workers and attorneys. CASA has been serving serving Delaware County’s children since 1992 and expanded its services to Chester County’s children in 2015. For more information, visit delcocasa.org.
