100Years Ago – 1920: An unusual surprise greeted a class of 33 prisoners arraigned before Magistrate Elliott yesterday. Instead of a fine ranging from $2 to $5 on the charge of drunkenness, the magistrate imposed a fine of $30 and costs on the first of

10 men, who fell victims of John Barleycorn. Various charges were preferred against 21 other men and women. In imposing a

$30 fine for drunkenness, Elliott made it plain that henceforth no mercy would be shown those who fall by the wayside through drink and that all prisoners brought before him on this charge would be forced to pay $31.35 or take a rest in the Media jail for 30 days.
