100 Years Ago – 1920: Frank Meizer, of 611 Morton Ave., Chester, escaped probably instant death early yesterday morning when thieves shot at him after robbing his store of clothing valued at more than $1,000. They escaped in a Cadillac limousine, which nearly figured in a collision at

No. 6 Toll Gate, Chester Pike. Police in Wayne are also seeking the men as the result of a shooting there last night.

75 Years Ago – 1945:

A threatened four-hour work stoppage “some afternoon this week,” of long lines operators who are members of the National Federation of Telephone

Workers would tie up all long distance telephone service into and out of Chester and Delaware County, a Bell Telephone Co. spokesman said today.

50 Years Ago – 1970:

Catherine DiCostanza, 70, of 310 Crestview Circle, Nether Providence, who reputedly originated the Italian sandwich known in the area as the hoagie in 1925, died Wednesday. Mrs. DiCostanza and her husband, Augustine, who operated a combinatio­n delicatess­en and sandwich shop for 43 years at 1212 W. Third St., Chester. The business was rented out for two years and earlier this year the family returned to operation of the shop at the same location. Mrs. DiCostanza reportedly made the first “hoagie” at the request of one of the many workmen who visited the delicatess­en and wanted to eat a large sandwich right there.

25 Years Ago – 1995:

Iacobucci Organizati­on, a developer of several housing developmen­ts in Aston and Brookhaven, was recognized on Wednesday by the Penn-Delco School Board for allowing Sun Valley’s new golf team to use the Penn Oaks Golf Course in West Chester at no charge to the district. “We would like to thank Tony Iacobucci, who owns the Penn Oaks Club,” said board member Mark

Eckhoff. Eckhoff also thanked school director Peter Scuderi, a scratch golfer himself who played college golf, for recognizin­g the students’ desire for a team and contacting Iacobucci.
