Other Times
100Years Ago – 1920: Mrs. Emma C. Bergdoll, and her four confederates, who were found guilty in the United States District Court Tuesday of conspiracy to aid Grover and Erwin Bergdoll, to dodge the draft, were granted a 10-day extension in which to file reasons for a new trail by Federal Judge Dickinson. The defendants remain at liberty on $10,000 bail each.
75Years Ago – 1945: A strong recommendation by Chester Building Inspector James A. Devlin that the entire Lamokin Village Annex war housing project be demolished as “unsafe” today brought to light the fact that 150 families – totaling 492 persons – face a loss of their homes if the plan is carried out. Devlin said the houses do no meet building code requirements, and urged the demolition of the new recreation building at Eighth and Edwards streets for the same reason.
50Years Ago – 1970: The proposed
100-acre Midcounty Expressway (Blue Route) interchange at Lancaster Pike in Radnor appeared all but dead Thursday, at least in its present form. The state Department of Transportation (PennDOT) said its plans to ask the U.S. Bureau of Public Roads to approve elimination of the sprawling interchange, long a target of harsh criticism in Radnor. The possibility of a smaller connection, however, remained open. At a public hearing last July, state officials had dubbed the interchange “the world’s largest.” It was to connect the expressway with U.S. Route 39 just west of Villanova.
25Years Ago – 1995: A 30-yearold Marcus Hook man was arrested for stealing a truck and outstanding warrants after Aston police stopped him for DUI on Concord Road last weekend. While the man was being taken to Riddle Memorial Hospital for a blood test, the truck’s owner reported it stolen from a township bar. 10 Years Ago – 2010: Scott Mayer of Concord and Bruce Miller of Chester Heights were appointed by the Garnet Valley School Board to fill vacancies on the board. They were administered the oath of office by District Magisterial Judge Richard Cappelli. Mayer, an attorney, takes the seat vacated by Michael Hanlon of Concord after 19 years of service. Miller, a business owner and father of four, fills the seat that was held by Charles Abel of Chester Heights.
