100Years Ago – 1920: Mrs. Emma C. Bergdoll, and her four confederat­es, who were found guilty in the United States District Court Tuesday of conspiracy to aid Grover and Erwin Bergdoll, to dodge the draft, were granted a 10-day extension in which to file reasons for a new trail by Federal Judge Dickinson. The defendants remain at liberty on $10,000 bail each.

75Years Ago – 1945: A strong recommenda­tion by Chester Building Inspector James A. Devlin that the entire Lamokin Village Annex war housing project be demolished as “unsafe” today brought to light the fact that 150 families – totaling 492 persons – face a loss of their homes if the plan is carried out. Devlin said the houses do no meet building code requiremen­ts, and urged the demolition of the new recreation building at Eighth and Edwards streets for the same reason.

50Years Ago – 1970: The proposed

100-acre Midcounty Expressway (Blue Route) interchang­e at Lancaster Pike in Radnor appeared all but dead Thursday, at least in its present form. The state Department of Transporta­tion (PennDOT) said its plans to ask the U.S. Bureau of Public Roads to approve eliminatio­n of the sprawling interchang­e, long a target of harsh criticism in Radnor. The possibilit­y of a smaller connection, however, remained open. At a public hearing last July, state officials had dubbed the interchang­e “the world’s largest.” It was to connect the expressway with U.S. Route 39 just west of Villanova.

25Years Ago – 1995: A 30-yearold Marcus Hook man was arrested for stealing a truck and outstandin­g warrants after Aston police stopped him for DUI on Concord Road last weekend. While the man was being taken to Riddle Memorial Hospital for a blood test, the truck’s owner reported it stolen from a township bar. 10 Years Ago – 2010: Scott Mayer of Concord and Bruce Miller of Chester Heights were appointed by the Garnet Valley School Board to fill vacancies on the board. They were administer­ed the oath of office by District Magisteria­l Judge Richard Cappelli. Mayer, an attorney, takes the seat vacated by Michael Hanlon of Concord after 19 years of service. Miller, a business owner and father of four, fills the seat that was held by Charles Abel of Chester Heights.
